Patients Warned Not To Make Hospital Visits For Minor Ailments

Thursday May 31 2012

PATIENTS have been warned not to go to Barnsley Hospital's accident and emergency department with minor ailments like sore throats over the bank holiday weekend.

GPs in the borough will be closed over the break but hospital staff have asked locals not to bother going to A and E for minor conditions like a sore throat or hang over, as has been known in the past.

Ken McDonald, medical director for NHS Barnsley said: “It’s always important to know exactly where to go when you’re feeling unwell but especially so over a bank holiday. Many people end up going to the accident and emergency department at Barnsley Hospital for very minor conditions like a sore throat or hangover when what they should do is self-care at home.

“If you’re unwell or unsure of your condition we always advise that you ring NHS Direct in the first instance. Some pharmacies will be open over the bank holiday and are great for getting expert advice on everyday illnesses. ”

There's been lots of debate on this on our Facebook wall - here's the link to the post

if i felt unwel and know somethink isnt right i would go to a and e i went a few yrs ago with earache and was told you have come to hospital with earache and when they looked in my ear i was admitted immediatley and had nearly 2 weeks in hospital so it is always best to get things checked out regardless of how minor ya think things are if i hadnt gone when i did i was told if the infection had got to my brain i would have died so my advice is get things checked

I think this is dangerous advice.  For example, a sore throat & a temperature is VERY serous in a woman who has recently given birth & can be fatal if left untreated.

I agree. I try and avoid going to hospital but I have been recently with what was originally thought to be pulled muscle, I am now awaiting for an MRI scan and more than likely an operation on a serious problem. If it does appear to be serious or out of the ordinary then it should be checked!
