THE PARENTS of a three-year-old who died of a rare cancer are hoping to mark the fifth anniversary of her death by registering a charity in her name.

Briony's Gift was set up in memory of Briony Woodward who died in 2007 after a two year battle with a childhood cancer, neuroblastoma.

The fund, which goes towards presents for children who are suffering from life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses at Sheffield Children's Hospital, needs to top £5,000 for it to become a registered charity.

Darron and Meayla Woodward, of Victoria Street, Stairfoot, who also run Barnsley Aces magic club, have organised various fundraisers and hope to reach their target this year.

Darren said: "When Briony died we set the fund up straight away. This year, being five years since Briony died, we really want to make it a full charity.

"Staff often ring up when a child has been diagnosed as we are like a mini wish charity.
"When cancer is diagnosed you feel like your world is caving in but the courage the children show is incredible."

Briony was diagnosed with cancer of the nerve cells when she was 18 months old and underwent operations, chemotherapy, blood transfusions and stem cell harvesting.

"When a child makes their wish, it could be anything they want like a toy, craft equipment. Then we get to work and within a few days the wish is granted.

"Recently we had a child ask for a Nintendo DS so we got her that and a few games. She will be having treatment for a few years so it's nice to do anything that makes it a bit easier."

A family fun day held last week in Cudworth raised over £1,000 for the charity.
