What Do You Think To The 'Immoveable' Block?

Monday May 14 2012

A HUGE block with the word 'immoveable' carved into it has been placed on the centre of Kendray Street - blocking it to traffic.

The stone-type square appeared overnight and bemused shoppers walking in to the town centre on Monday.

It stands at around five foot high and has the word 'Immoveable' carved into it - although many children on their way to school this morning had a good go.
Already someone has been photographed climbing on it - and someone else has kindly put a table and chairs at the side of it.

It has been installed by theatre group Mind The Gap who are filming the installation through the town's CCTV cameras. The live feed can be seen here. They will be gathering ideas all week...But the question is: What do you want to do with it? So far, there's a group of folk determined to 'plank' on it and others with theories that it could pop open to reveal something inside.

What do you think to it? Is it art? Is it a statement? What do you want to do to the block?

Follow the interesting debate on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/wearebarnsley or this should be a direct link

And there's been a great video showing some local lads doing flips off it, that has been uploaded here.

Plus - what do you think? Check out our word on the street video here!

(For those who asked: It has been funded by Legacy Trust UK and Arts Council England.)

I thought taxi's was supposed to use this road when level crossing is down, which is quite often!

This is going to cost taxi passengers traveling to easterly destinations an extra £1 just for the sake of "art" and a bit of fun. There are plenty of other places where this could have been displayed without causing unnecessary disruption to people. I knew 2 weeks ago there was going to be a so called event on Kendary St but no one in the council seemed to know what it was about, it is clear to me now that the council did know something, especially highways as they must have given the go ahead for it.

Worked though, hasn't it? Divided opinion and created discussion, just what art and theatre are designed to do.
I like it! About time we brought more culture into this town.

Why didnt they put it on the footpath so it didnt block the road? Its costing the public money when get in a taxi to go all the way round cause of this stupid prank. Its also costing the taxi drivers money cause not everyone wants to pay the extra. People want to think about others before doing things like this.

Lighten up, it's a bit of culture and also a bit of fun. N if you look at the second pic there's plenty of room for taxis to get round it, although I would expect that the council taxis would have been asked not to charge any extra as it's the council who have given permission for it to be there. . . ! ?

Reply Posted by K.Wilkinson on Monday May 14 2012 at 12:40
Ha, people who say this is a waste of money -  you are looking at it, and reading about it, it has been picked up by this site and no doubt various other media. It has got people talking about something other than their repeated amazement that it sometimes doesn't rain and gives kids an interesting change to their trip to school, maybe even providing a little inspiration. Breath of fresh air for Barnsley that should be applauded, along with the people who think you can set stone on fire...

Reply Posted by Guest on Monday May 14 2012 at 12:49
It might cost an extra pound for a taxi but the buses still charge the same so get a bus and stop moaning! If we don't start doing something to get Barnsley's name on the map then there will never be money brought to the town. I think it's a great idea personally and it has sparked loads of conversation and debate...which was it's purpose.

Yeh I know all that cause am a taxi driver on rank.

Reply Posted by on Monday May 14 2012 at 13:06
There is no such thing as Council taxis. All taxis are "licensed" by BMBC not owned by them, taxis are all owned by independent people, you don't honestly think that Barnsley council own all Pubs in Barnsley because they license them do you?. Barnsley council do not pay anything towards the purchase of the vehicle or to the running costs and the drivers do not get a wage from BMBC, so therefore BMBC cannot ask taxis to not charge any extra. Taxi drivers have a living to make too and this huge lump of concrete doesn't make it any easier for them.

Reply Posted by The Eyes on Monday May 14 2012 at 13:34
They didn't put it on the footpath because it wouldn't then have been a  roadblock intended to cause a stir. I'm sure lots of thought has gone into it...and it's worked too.

Reply Posted by guest on Monday May 14 2012 at 13:59
This has been done by a theatre company, who have chosen to use some of THEIR funding (who knows if it's 'our' money or not) to make a point about the way in which we see a barrier or an 'immoveable object'. They WANTED you all to react! Go to the link and read a little bit, instead of complaining about an extra £1 on taxi fares!! here it is in case you paid no attention what-so-ever to the article.

I don't get it, if it's meant to inspire a debate, it's done that very well, but why? it's made a debate on the Barnsley news page, will probably be in the Barnsley chronicle, and in some Barnsley magazine... there is a problem with all this, it's all in Barnsley and i doubt it will get us anyone coming in some millionaire exhibitionists coming in some time soon. Also it's not completely immovable as it must have got there somehow, by the end of the week we'll either not be bothered with it anymore or it will be removed

Great, the whole country is in a recession and some bright spark in Barnsley decides to spend money (I'm guessing it's not peanuts either) on putting a huge brick in the middle of the road.  A public toilet would of been more use to everyone brains.  And yes it's triggered a public debate because it's blocking the frikin road and people are now paying more for taxis so well done as if we weren't skint enough and jobless thank you.  Also ill give it while after the weekend before someone takes a dump on there ;)

a dice? someone has already came up with that, but its a good idea, what you think dice or rubix cube? rubix cube i thought would be cool because people are puzzled by this immovable object as the rubix cube is a puzzle to solve

Dont like it - dont look. Also the taxi thing - i see people down at asda saving money then wasting on taxi fairs.. hey walk - its good for you!

When I was a lad, taxis were for rich posh folk. If we were lucky we took our shopping home on the bus, normally we walked.

Sounds like they are making a killing, a quid extra for each trip. They must be laughing.
By the way if you have a good look at it you will notice that it appears to be fine Yorkshire stone and not a lump of concrete.

Reply Posted by Dave on Monday May 14 2012 at 22:25
I don't think it would still be there if it did not have permission. These theatre folk usually know what they are doing. You can be certain that the council will have given permission. I am sure you can continue to support art with a clear conscience.
It it causing a discussion not an obstruction.

Maybe that is the point. Now we know what it is like to have a barrier put in our way. It sure beats a poster or a leaflet. I like it, let them keep their barrier here. Kendray street was always a bit dull anyway.

come from such an innate piece. Like it or loath it people are talking about it and engaging together. I take my hat off to the installation. Thank you!

Reply Posted by Chris Starkie on Wednesday May 16 2012 at 03:37
To all you saying it will cost an extra £1 in taxi fares... if you were that hard strapped for cash you would;

a. not get a taxi & get a bus
b. ring a taxi beforehand, as they are a lot cheaper than black and whites

Those that can afford taxis shouldn't complain about an extra pound because they clearly aren't skint to be able to get a taxi in the first place.

It's a bit of fun, and who says it is or isn't tax payers money? It could as easily be privately funded, you don't have a clue how its paid for so don't be judging.

So many people in Barnsley are morbid and negative, yeah we're in a recession but so what? Life's short so appreciate something different and creative coming to our town, regardless whether you enjoy it or not. I mean god forbid something artistic getting in the way of your routine, mundane lives.

It's not just a bit of fun, it's making a real point.  Is Barnsley really that miserable and narrow-minded?  Or is it full of people who have never had to face an apparently insurmountable obstacle in their lives? Certainly sounds ripe for something to stir it up.  btw- if my local taxi firm has to go a long way round for any reason, they don't charge extra.
