Barnsley Could Follow Other Council's Example In Legal High Ban

Thursday March 26 2015

BARNSLEY Council may look at implementing a ban on legal highs in the town centre.

The move would mimic what's happening in Lincoln from April 1, where a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) has been put in place to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The move is the first of its kind in the country and Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman for Barnsley Council, would not rule out any measure which would contribute towards improving the safety and enjoyment of the town centre.

"Any measures must be reasonable and proportionate to address relevant issues to the town," he said.

"This is not to say that there isn't a problem associated with legal highs in Barnsley - it's not absolutely clear cut that their use is the singular contributor to anti-social behaviour in our town centre."
