Public Transport Group Continue Protest

Wednesday March 4 2015

SIXTY so-called 'Freedom Riders' boarded a train on Monday to continue their long-running protest about the scrapping of free rail travel for the elderly.

The free travel scheme was scrapped on April 1 last year but since then a hardy group has been working to get it reinstated.

Campaigners travelled to York - home of Northern Rail's headquarters - and held a rally in the city. They say what they're doing is in the 'interests of everybody'.

George Arthur, secretary of the Barnsley Retirees Action Group, said: "We live in one of the richest countries in the world - any idea that we can't afford free local travel for older and disabled people is nonsense.

"Younger people should support our campaign as well. They too will need free travel one day."

What do you think to the protests? Do they have your backing? Have your say.
