Charges Added To Spend A Penny In Bus Station

Wednesday April 25 2012

CHARGES will be added for any passenger that wants to spend a penny in the transport interchange.

From May 2 South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) will be introducing coin operated turnstiles at the toilets which will cost 20p to enter.

David Young, SYPTE director of customer experience, said: “It’s with reluctance we are introducing the charge, but, given pressures on funding, we feel we can’t maintain a high standard of service without charging to use the toilets. We introduced turnstiles at Rotherham Interchange last year. These have operated with few complaints from customers.”

The turnstiles will accept 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins but no change will be given.

SYPTE say it is to cover the ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the facilities and prevent vandalism, graffiti and damage.

Introducing a charge is disappointing but not providing a facility to give change is taking advantage. Presumably they have a solution to access needs of mothers with prams & wheelchair users?

The saying goes 'I need to spend a penny' therefore we should be charged a penny.....20p to have a pee its laughable & how come disabled ppl or ppl with prams get to use the disabled toilet for FREE?? Does this toilet not need to be cleaned? I hope to see soap & toilet roll & no floaters the next time I use it or I will be requesting a refund lol

It was only a matter of time as to when they would start charging to go to toilet... ya can blame the teenagers that hang around in them... kicking off the locks off the doors etc etc. i just hope they don't make any of the cleaning staff redundant due to them not being used and no longer need cleaning as much.

this is a joke, why should we pay 20p when there is never toilet roll in the toilets, soap in the dispensers or locks on some of the doors? ridiculous.

Wrong, passengers already pay a toll for using the bus station.  The toilets are situated in the farest corner of the bus station and should have been in the centre, what's the point of having a conveniance that isn't conveniant.. Another example of Rip off Britain.

I have only used these toilets a few times and have never really seen a problem with them although I knew they would soon start charging. I don't mind paying 20p so long as they are kept clean, tidy and well stocked of toilet paper and soap. In regards to questions about getting in with prams they usually have a side gate that can be opened by the toilet attendant for 20p, same goes for people with lugguage etc. The toilets in the Alhambra are free so if you don't want to pay make sure you take a leak before heading down for the bus :)

how ridiculous that we all need to keep change in our pockets to use the toilet. What with bus prices going up all the time now people have to pay to use a toilet. I always use the toilets at weekend with me having a stomach complaint and a 3 yr old who needs the toilet every minute lol and have never seen any children knocking around vandalising etc. What happens if people are in need of the facilities and have only there bus fare home do they have to walk it home cause they needed to go who ever thought of this never took other people into consideration. Just a money making sceme.

They've had spent a penny turnstiles at the Rotherham bus station for a few months now. As my workplace is only a 10 minutes walk from the bus station, I can usually tie a knot in it until I get to work and pee for free. I just hope this pee charge doesn't give my employers any ideas!
