Police Test Thousands For Drink Driving During Christmas Crackdown

Monday January 26 2015

THE number of drink drivers arrested after testing positive during the Christmas period has fallen by two per cent.

Officers carried out 3,372 breath tests throughout December across South Yorkshire. Of those, four per cent of people (149) tested positive, refused or failed to provide a sample.

In 2013, six per cent of the 3,983 tests carried out over the same period were positive.

Out of the 3,372 cases in 2014, 599 tests (18 per cent) were administered following a collision.

Chief Inspector Glen Suttenwood said: "Drivers are advised to keep in mind that drink driving puts at risk both their lives and the lives of others and to think twice before getting behind the wheel.

"South Yorkshire Police will continue to be vigilant and target those who drink and drive."
