A SINGER from Barnsley have been named the hero of a mental health charity for her work in raising awareness.

Singer/songwriter Kayla Kavanagh, 32, was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder three years ago and has used her music to help raise awareness of the condition.

She won the creative section of the Mental Health Heroes Awards. She said: "I can’t believe that I’ve actually won the award and am truly humbled to have been recognised by the judging team of such high profile mental health organisations.

“Music has been the key to my wellbeing living with personality disorder, allowing me to focus the chaotic emotions into lyrics, music and song. Having had the opportunity to record an album and perform at events across the UK has allowed the positive message to ‘go viral.”

Kayla is a mental health trainer, delivering personality disorder training through the national organisation Emergence.
