A POPULAR Barnsley park will have a major overhaul after securing £2.8 million in funding.

Cannon Hall Park and Gardens will now undergo repairs and restoration after receiving the money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund.

The project aims to boost the Georgian park and gardens including key features such as an ice house, deer shelter and gardeners’ cottage.

Work will also be undertaken to dredge and restore the lakes of the park to improve their appearance, restore original vistas, improve water quality and support biodiversity.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "We're thrilled to receive this initial support. We're very excited about taking this project forward - it will be transformational for Cannon Hall, a flagship site for Barnsley."
