Fly-Tipper Faces Heavy Fine

Monday December 22 2014

A BARNSLEY fly-tipper is facing a bill of over £800 following an appearance at Barnsley Magistrates' Court.

Darren Cooper, 31, of Milgate Street, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping an exhaust and a fridge freezer at Laithes Lane, Athersley, on June 12.

Cooper was fined £293 plus £362.64 investigation costs, £70 clean-up costs, £70 legal costs and £29 victim surcharge, totalling £824.64.

The court heard that Cooper and an accomplice were on the way to the tip, but were turned away because of the height restriction, so decided to tip the fridge and exhaust in the layby.

Coun Roy Miller said: "There's no excuse for fly-tipping. Simple checks can be made in advance of visiting our waste and recycling sites by calling 01226 772045.

"I hope this case acts as a warning to others who consider blighting our borough."
