POLICE staff are set to strike as part of a protest over pay on December 22.

Unison members working for South Yorkshire Police will stage the 24-hour strike in support of a campaign to re-open pay talks in a bid to improve the one per cent pay offer for 2014.

Among those striking will be 999 call takers, PCSOs, fingerprint experts, detention officers as well as staff in a wide range of vital operational and organisational support roles.

Dave Prentis, general secretary at Unison, said: "It's rare for police staff to take industrial action and the strike is a clear sign that they’ve had enough.

"For many of our members it will be the first time they've ever taken industrial action over pay. The last time police members took action in relation to pay was 25 years ago in 1989."
