Honours Even In South Yorkshire Derby

Wednesday December 3 2014

BARNSLEY and Doncaster shared the spoils in the South Yorkshire derby last night.

The Reds got off to the best possible start five minutes in when Lewin Nyatanga headed home a Conor Hourihane corner.

Barnsley continued to control the pace of the game and on 21 minutes Leroy Lita tested Sam Johnstone in the Doncaster goal, firing a powerful volley that needed a very good save to keep it out of the back of the net.

Much against the run of play, Doncaster were to have the next chance. With just over ten minutes to play until half time, Ross Turnbull made a good save to keep the Reds' lead intact.

As the two sides came out for the second period, it was the visitors who looked more threatening in the opening exchanges, winning several corners early on.

As Doncaster were unable to make anything of their chances, the Reds remained in front until Theo Robinson levelled for Rovers on 53 minutes, scoring into an open net after Turnbull had made an initial save.

Doncaster had the better of a scrappy second half and Kyle Bennett should have done better with a clear sight of goal, while Nyatanga put a free header wide for Barnsley as neither side were able to find a winner.

Danny Wilson, who was pleased with his side's work rate, said: "The work ethic from all of the lads was tremendous - they've put a real shift in.

"In recent weeks, Doncaster have done well, particularly away from home. It was always going to be a tough game and with one or two of their players they caused us a few problems.

"Was it a fair result? Maybe it was."
