A PENSIONER had to be cut free from the wreckage of her car after a smash in Stainborough yesterday.

The woman, in her 70s, was taken to hospital Wednesday lunchtime after the accident involving two cars at Lowe Lane.

Fire crews from Tankersley and Barnsley rushed to the scene with cutting gear to free the woman from her Rover 25.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters used cutting gear to remove the roof of the Rover and free the woman, who was taken to hospital suffering from suspected spinal injuries."

Have you ever thought that the lady might have been the inocent party in all this Chrissy? I agree with your point about older drivers but, what ever happened with innocent until proven guilty.

i agree with chrissy, i recently had to drive up scotland to see family and the amount of near misses we had on the motorway with elderly drivers was just horrific, i know its horrible and that it takes away some independence but they have lived there lives to the fullest to reach such a age and shouldnt risk taking away a young persons life, its proven that the older you get the slower your reflexes are so surely its common sense that they shouldnt drive, did i mention i had my 9 month old son in the car with me and that twice i shut my eyes thinking we were gonna crash, its just selfish of the elderly to continue to drive on the roads and put other drivers at risk xXx

U tell 'em John lol. If the old woman had not pulled out, the accident would not have happened. Those old people never look what they're doing, they should all be banned from driving - they never looked, pull out on ya n stats show 73% of all road accidents include someone over the age of 55. They are a danger to the roads, revoke their lisenses lol ;-)

My Dad is 73 and a competent driver. You cannot tar everyone with the same brush. He is disabled and would not be able to lead a full and active life without his car!

Spare a though for the young woman who is pregnant, if this woman hadn't pulled out of the junction without stopping that poor girl wouldn't have had to spend all day at hospital worrying about her unborn child!

I was the pregnant woman in the car crash. I know the weather was rubbish that day and it was pouring with rain, that however does not excuse the woman not stopping at a clearly marked junction where she should have given way. I am sympathetic to her and hope she has recovered well, however if she is unable to see a clear give way sign then she should not be allowed to drive, I spent several hours in hospital the day of the crash and the main conecrn was for my unborn son. I think drivers should be made to re take their test every 5-10 years after the age of 60 so we know they are compitent drivers!

I think everyone should have to take their test again every 10 years. Competency isn't about age!

Statistics 20% of accidents involve drivers who have been drinking. Should we ban the other 80% of drivers who don't drink as they are apparently more prone to accidents?

Totally trust drivers who shut their eyes to avoid accidents.

For those who so obviously dislike the grey-haired brigade, can I remind you that they are less likely to: drive under the influence of drugs; drive under the influence of alcohol; drive whild using their mobile phone and drive over the legal speed limit!
They have some uses in life - the over 60's are responsible for most of the unpaid caring in this country including acting as unpaid child minders - and that is after having spent a lifetime working.
