THE future of a town council where a former clerk pocketed hundreds of thousands of pounds will be debated.

Calls for Brierley Town Council to be abolished were made after its former clerk, Janet Cooper, saddled it with a debt of more than £1 million.

The 52-year-old was jailed for eight years for the fraud last year.

The meeting - which takes place on December 4 - will receive a motion from supporters of the petition that requested the community governance review. The motion will recommend the abolition of Brierley Town Council.

Residents are invited to attend the meeting at 6pm in the Welfare Hall, off Clear View, Grimethorpe.
