A NEW Aldi supermarket could be open as soon as next summer after plans were approved by the council.

The Goldthorpe store will sit on its triangular-shaped site between Barnsley Road and the A635.

Aldi says work on the store should start in February and be ready for the summer.

Coun May Noble said: "This proposal gives Highgate something that it hasn't had for 20 years. It's very, very welcomed by local people and I strongly, strongly support this application."

She said it was particularly welcome that Aldi had given a commitment to recruit local people into the jobs.

Coun Dick Wraith added: "They're a very good, quality employer. They will not be minimum wage jobs. These will be quality jobs with an excellent employer."

Mark Taylor, property director for Aldi, said: "This is a momentous occasion for residents of Goldthorpe who have supported the proposals.

"Aldi is looking forward to opening a new store here - this will be top priority for the company and we aim to start on site early next year."
