THOUSANDS of people braved the cold to watch Barnsley's Christmas lights being switched on.

The popular event - which started at 5pm outside the town hall - had musical entertainment from Dearne FM and local four-piece indie-rock boy band 404.

Noddy made his first appearance at 5.50pm to get everyone in the mood for the big switch-on, before he was joined by mayor Coun Tim Shepherd and compere Stephanie Hirst who illuminated the town centre at 6pm.

A fantastic firework finale then wowed the crowds from the town hall's roof.

A council spokesperson said: "Thanks to the thousands of people who came to the lights switch on tonight - you did us proud!

"It was great to see so many people and we've had some good feedback so far."

Did you go and watch the event? What did you think? Have your say below.

Really enjoyed the fireworks and the lights coming on - they looked really professional and made the town centre look like a wonder of the world!
Very surprised there were no tea/coffee stands though as they would have made a killing! (Like Greggs and Costa did)
Bit of a cock up where the only lights that lit up were around the town centre and nowhere else but all in all, a good show! Well done and thanks :)

It was a great night kids really enjoyed it the fireworks were brill the only fault was the kids struggled to she the guest the stage could do with been higher so people/kids can see from the back.

disappointing.

If you weren't on the first two rows no one else could see a thing.

The people in front of you were higher cos they put the stage at the top of a hill!

Was much better at the Alhambra roof where everyone could see.
I was in only at the town hall steps so quite close yet I couldn't see a single thing and so my children had no way of seeing anything! They wee very upset. We got there quite early too as we left straight from school.

The Christmas light switch on to our family is the start of Christmas and really look forward to it. It really was upsetting

Of its in the same place next year, we won't be going because it's not fair to the children.
