Team Get Rid Of Chewing Gum Problem

Tuesday November 11 2014

A TEAM have been ridding Barnsley town centre's streets of chewing gum.

You may have spotted men in green outfits and orange backpacks roaming the streets recently. They're the council's Neighbourhood Pride team, who have been using specialised equipment to get rid of the sticky stuff.

Almost a billion packets of chewing gum are sold in the UK every year, but around 90 per cent of it ends up on the streets.

The gum-busting team have been using a machine to clean up the town's streets, which desiccates the gum into a powder that can then be swept up.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "There's a lot of redevelopment taking place in the town centre, but it's still important to keep the area clean, tidy and welcoming.

"It costs around £1.6 million to collect litter and clean up gum and cigarette ends from streets in the borough, so I urge people to be responsible and dispose of their litter correctly.

"Anyone caught blighting our town will be fined."

All very good for the town centre but all the borough's smaller shopping areas should be treated equally well. Should be paid for from more fines for littering.

Why should fines be to pay for chewing gum cleaning its what we pay council tax for

Council tax is for 'services', I am not so sure that Chewing gum removal is a service at all. I dont litter and neither do my family! Fine 'em all and fine them big!

Yes right we will pay g4s Gestapo snatch squads to grab people in streets and extort people with ridiculous fines

'Gestapo' snatch squads & extortion.... really?

They should be council staff with a remit to fine appropriately, personally the fines are only ridiculous at the moment due to the fact that they don't deter people, larger fines and a good number being made to pay and we will see Litter fall. Same for dog fouling and fly tipping, these are blights on Barnsley

They should be fined to punish them for littering OUR town and to discourage them from doing it again.

Fining innocent people is wrong but fining those who are causing the problem is the right course of action.

Id prefer my taxes to pay for improving the town not to pay for following litter bugs around. Let them pay that themselves in fines.

In Huddersfield they have boards on posts for you to stick used chewing gum to. Simple:) Just saying.

Only useful if you're walking past just as you decide you've had enough of the gum otherwise it's onto the floor. Besides how many boards would you want see around the town - seems a bit unhygenic to me. Think again Kirklees.

Lets go the whole hog. Tax is put on fags and drink put. £10 tax on a packet of chewing gum that should do it.

If we all understood the cost of cleaning it up, we might be right in thinking, put it in a bin! Now that is hygenic.

People getting about this town and neighbouring shopping precincts are a lazy lot when it comes to disposing of chewing gum properly thus creating un necessary work, cost, time that could be better put to use. Do the right thing.
