Firefighters To Strike On Run-Up To Bonfire Night

Wednesday October 29 2014

SOUTH Yorkshire's firefighters are set to strike for four days in the run-up to the busy bonfire night period.

The latest strike action is to start at 6pm on October 31. It's the result of a long-standing row over pensions and will end on November 4.

Jamie Courtney, chief fire officer for South Yorkshire, said: "We’re aware of the new strike dates and we have contingency arrangements in place to provide a basic level of fire cover to the people of South Yorkshire.

"We want people to take caution if they're planning on holding their own bonfire or fireworks display, or consider holding their event on a different night instead."

Do you back the firefighters' strikes? Have your say below.

The thing I don't understand is where the money will come from to pay public sector workers more money, if we were rolling in money then that's fine but were up to our necks in it since the last lot "emptied there bladders with gusto" the money away. www.debtbombshell.com check out this link and see the borrowed money rack up but don't think that this has started today it started back in 1997, with commitments which now when anyone or any government tried to break they are looked upon as scum when all they are trying to do is sort this mess out, more labour more debt more immigrants more lying police commissioner turning the other cheek so he can keep his head in the trough. what's labour ever done for the working folk NOWT!

You DO realise that the Tories have borrowed THREE times more than what Labour did in thirteen years don't you?
You DO realise that under the Tories that debt against GDP has one up from 56% to 89% don't you?

Tut Tut....

When will these firemen realise that the rest of us have to work untill we're 67. They will still be able to finish at 60 , get their lump sum and then get their public funded pensions that most people can only dream of! Sorry boys but you have little public sympathy for this strike !

As a rule i wont support a strike but for the firefighters i break that rule. Theyre not asking for the world just what theyre worth .

These guys are not professionals, if they were they would not be going on strike. They are chancers striking at a time they believe will cause the most inconvenience for the rest of us. Their terms and conditions are significantly better than those of most working people and they should get on with the job they are paid to do. Indeed quite a lot of them have second jobs as they get loads of time off from their fire fighting role. oh i (above) has got it just right.

QUOTE - "These guys are not professionals,"

Ladies and gentlemen, now we have comprehensive proof that Charles is a deluded fool that has FAR too much spare time on his hands and it is also evidently clear that he has nothing constructive to say on this forum other than posting inane right wing drivel on a daily basis.

You have my support, Firemen will not be able to do the job as well at 65 as they would at 30 is lunacy.

Don't forget we're all only retiring later due to other factors i.e. Banks gambling with economy like monopoly money, the increased rich/poor divide and successive governments attacks on the working class.for some reason that's just accepted now.

People say its irresponsible, we'll see the first time a 65 year old fireman gets the blame for not being physically able to do his job when required and people die.

Just be careful with your bonfires and do your research as to why these guys and girls are striking, look at the causes and make your own minds up.

The UK is the only country in Europe that has seen equality go down since the year 2000, that should tell you something about the direction this country is going.

Ray,

You said 'Don't forget we're all only retiring later due to other factors i.e. Banks gambling with economy like monopoly money, the increased rich/poor divide and successive governments attacks on the working class.for some reason that's just accepted now'.

What you failed to mention was the actions of the last Labour government where messrs Blair and Brown and their colleagues spent our money (which we did not have - we had to borrow it) on an unprecedented scale. That is the real reason that most of us are having to 'tighten our belts' a little.

Charles, the first couple of years were in surplus with labour a feat not managed by maggie or major. I know you're a screaming tory but The defecit came directly from the bank bailout. The guardian has a nice diagram showing this. The vast majority of this debt is the economic bailout. I'm neither a labour or Tory supporter I'm undecided who I will vote on in next election, but stop banging the same drum that we are in this mess because of the last government because we would still be in a similar situation had the blues been in. Everyone bent over and took one for the banks, the real political power in this country are the ones with the most money and titles.

Whats not been in the news the last couple of weeks is the extreme effort that politicians have been going to to allow a loophole in the banker bonus laws, theyve been bending over backwards to help these guys out.

I concur!

The Tories have borrowed MORE money during their short tortuous tenure than what Labour did in THIRTEEN YEARS!
Public sector borrowing has gone up more than a THIRD under the TORIES!

AND again, since Thatcher and her cronies paved the way and moved us from being a manufacturing powerhouse to more service industry orientation this country has simply NOT recovered.

I will work till I'm 65 Corse I will I'm going to retire now at 30 because working is no good when the just take it all back of you and the expect you to work till your 65 if you are lucky enough to reach that age working like a work horse for years

If you intend to retire at 30, I would suggest that you may wish to consider enrolling at college so that you can possibly improve your education. Just a thought.

Im a fireman. None of us take striking easily. We dont want to strike, not just from the obvious loss of pay but more importantantly that our skills and expertise are not going to be available to the public if they need us. But we simply cant keep allowing our pay and conditions to be erroded and not showing solidarity against it. People who dissaprove of what we are doing need to understand that if the government get their way they could have a fire appliance coming to a housefire of one of their loved ones in the future with 3 or 4 firefighters on board that are nearly 60 years old. Which from obvious reasons isnt ideal. The tory toffs have just got a nice pay rise, but remember were all in this together. We save people, not banks.
Firefighters who signed up many years ago are now having their conditions ripped up, so from potentially retiring at 50 after 30 years service are now having to work an extra ten years, paying into the pension for an extra ten years and getting less at the end of it and with the threat of getting the sack due to poor fitness, thats not fair.
And from the comment that many of us have second jobs, they do, but were earn around 350 pound a week, so many ave no choice. Im not complaining at our wage, i understand many get less but for what we have to do sometimes i believe we deserve it and more. People should stop hammering the workers of this country, whether be ambulance staff, hospital workers etc and stand up to the self serving pigs of westminster, cos one things for sure, they will be ok and so will their mates.

Just a few points on what you have posted.

1. Who are these tory toffs who have just got a nice pay rise? If you mean the proposed pay increase for MP's, then all MP's will be offered the increase, not just conservatives.

2. I would probably rather see a fire appliance 'manned' by men approaching sixty years of age than being 'manned' by women. You don't mention that.

3. The banks had to be saved. Only a fool would argue against that.

4. Fire fighters surely have a responsibility to keep themselves fit.

5. You are not being honest when you say that firemen earn £350 per week (£18200 per annum).

6. If fire fighters do not want to strike, why do you not only choose to strike, but you do it at what potentially is the busiest time of the year?

I believe that I can see the case being put forward by fire fighters, but what you have to remember is that you are being funded by the public purse and there is just no funds available at the present time and neither will there be for many, many years to come. As a country we have been living beyond our means for far too long and we are now at the point where that situation can no longer continue.

Charles you are quite a deluded buffoon, banks needed to be saved WHY ? ONLY A FOOL would think that, the money could have been put into education/ nhs / fire service , better causes then making the fat banker bonuses. the country would have survived, Tories are crippling the country and the sooner Cameron and his fleas round $hite brigade get voted out, the better.. Good on the FIRE/NHS/TEACHERS FOR FIGHTING FOR WHAT THERE DESERVE

bang on you sign up for a job and signed a piece of paper saying what you would get and when. Why should you now have that piece of paper torn up and be told now you're not, it wasn't your fault. Know this the majority of people support you - those that don't are the ones who feel they are better than everyone else like tory toad charles. Hopefully he will need you when you're not there.

Whilst we're all in this together the richest 10% have gotten richer in this recession. Amazing isn't it.

Charles, ALL MP's have had an eywatering 21% PAY RISE over the last TWO YEARS!

I wonder how many years it would take a firefighter to achieve a total pay rise of 21%?

I don't think they have had 21% extra salary over the last ten years do you?

2 - You cant mention the manning of pumps by women due to the equality act.
Hence the term of "fire fighter".

3 - You also state that we have been living beyond our means for far too long, yes you are right the TORIES have borrowed MORE money in the few short years than Labour did in thirteen.
George "Gideon" Osbourne tells us that the deficit is being cut but public sector borrowing under the Tories has gone up a THIRD.
Debt against GDP is almost 87% the HIGHEST FIGURE ever!

4 - Tax cuts for millionaires paid for by people at the lowest rung of the totem pole.

And FINALLY - If you sign up to a contract of employment then that contract should stand.

The cut backs that have already taken place may well have contributed to a poor boy's death this week. Had the fire station closest to the terrible incident not been manned by retained fire crew. I am not getting at the retained they did their best with the training and knowledge they have. They lost that fight and knew that deaths were inevitable because of reckless decisions to save money. They pay a lot into the pension fund it isn't free! They do not want to strike but neither do they want to witness anymore casualties because of cut backs. It is an extremely hard physical and emotionally draining job. Please dont comment unless you really know the facts. And by the way I don't care about grammar or spelling mistakes the really stupid people are those posting ignorant opinions not factual ones!

Your right ali. I know the lads who fought so bravely to save the poor victims of that horrible fire were not helped by the cutbacks of recent years. And they are not going to get better. Anyone living in the penistone area have a long wait for a fire engine unfortunatley. But hey, according to charles, its just gotta be done. Lets keep cutting until theres nothing left and more and more peoples lives are put at risk. But weve still got enough money in the coffers for a fancy new 50bn pound rail link from leeds to london which we desperatley need. Lets get our priorities right please

I agree higher the better Charles is just a sexiest fool how the hell does a 60 year old man stay fit enough to be a fire fighter he is deluded beyond all telling and his post is just a joke he needs to give his head a shake and give him self a good slap

Charles,

Your comment regarding Firefighters having better terms and conditions than many other workers, therefore" they should just get on with it" is ill considered.

You do have a point, in that many workers in this country have very poor terms and conditions, but a race to the bottom is the last thing that an economy needs to recover.

The fact is that you will never fully appreciate the men and women who, without a second thought, would sacrifice their lives to save yours.

Unfortunately the only way left to defend themselves against a future of increased risk to themselves and the public is to withdraw the service they usually provide 24/7.

It is not an easy decision or one taken hastily, and could be averted tomorrow were Westminster to follow in the footsteps of NI Wales and Scottland? Who have all offered their fighters an improved offer.

Following the reign of Mrs Thatcher the UK had dilapidated schools, hospitals, rail & road systems in Europe. That's what the last Government invested tax payers money in, not this Tory crap about wasting money we didn't have. Ps we can't retire at 65 because the Bankers wasted all our money playing monopoly.

There is no justification for demanding a better pension than others.

Take More out + put less in = Greed.

If you're not fit enough to do your job, you find a lighter job like everyone else.

Reply Posted by Ray on Friday October 31 2014 at 17:40
No it's called terms and conditions, generally you sign up to them when you have a contract. Some of these signed up 20 odd years ago so what the government is doing is illegal, money was paid in every month by both parties, you can't just decide that now you can't have it.

Funny no ones saying that to direcors of the multinationals who take more out an put less in.

Reply Posted by Mr C on Thursday October 30 2014 at 16:08
Mick its this sort of attitude that is ruining this country you are a total idiot why would someone risk their life working as a fire fighter for poor treatment like that they deserve every penny they get and more and we all know its harder to find work the older you get. You have just made your self sound a proper foolish brain-dead no life

Reply Posted by Mick on Thursday October 30 2014 at 18:47
Hardly a justification, more a rant from a dullard. Do your cause a favour and leave the negotiations to others. Stand to the rear of the picket line with your placard in your hand (facing forward) and shout:-

Wadder we want, more than others,
When do we want it, now.
