'Social Supermarket' Wins National Award

Wednesday September 24 2014

THE country's first 'social supermarket' has won a national award for the work it has done in Barnsley.

Community Shop, which is run by Company Shop in Goldthorpe, won the 'community partner' accolade at the Food and Drink Federation Awards in London.

Community Shop is a social enterprise that redistributes surplus food from the supply chain and makes it available at heavily discounted prices to those living in areas of deprivation.

Working with many big-name retailers including Asda, Morrisons and Marks and Spencer, the scheme - which drew in the nation's media on its December opening - has proved a massive success.

As well as the cut-price items, the store's members also benefit from access to its in-store 'community hub', which provides debt advice and employment training.

Mark Game, managing director of Company Shop, said: "We have been bowled over by the support received for Community Shop so far.

"Company Shop has always viewed surplus food as a valuable resource and our social supermarket model shows just how much of a positive social impact we are able to have - both on people's lives and on the industry as a whole."

No one is going to listen to an argument that is put across as eloquently as yours is.
Whether or not you are indeed able to spell, your message gives over the impression that you are lazy and prejudice. A social enterprise or a social state is there to help everybody, and one day it will be there for if you were to unfortunately need that helping hand.

@Keeley so you think people don't need an helping hand, do you? I hope one day you don't find yourself on a low wage or zero contract. This shop has helped hundreds of family's, if not more, it's people like you who look at the poverty that surrounds this country and blame the poor for all its ills, hypocrite.

@keeley
most if the people that now come to England are in the eu since join the eu everyone has the right to live in any country in the European union.
I felt the same let's xx xx them off back home but have you seen the news recently.
syrian refugees fleeing for there life.
iraqi refugees the same flee or run the gauntlet risk of been beheaded and there heads put on a fencing pole and publically displayed.
millions of them going through borders of Turkey trying to find safety
its a cruel world we live in sometimes
were pretty well protected here and I hope if we were to one day have to flee England then other country's would be as welcoming as our government.
I work on recruitment and find we get more reliability with foreigners than some of our own that just don't want work...
I'm beginning to feel sorry for some of the refugees seen as what's occurring at the moment.
Some people are not as fortunate as us

I hope it never happens to you as you will soon reflect on your above words.

@keeley how narrow minded are you?! And if you're going to insult people, please do so in proper English. I hope you didn't fill out a job application form like that...

@Keeley - You might want to think yourself gratefull that you are not in a situation where you need help to feed your family, I would have been very gratefull of a place like the community shop a few years ago, whilst on statutory maternity pay, my partner lost his job and we were told that due to me still being classed as in full time employment we were not entitled to any help what so ever, luckily I have a brilliant family who helped me massively. I am now in a lucky position that both myself and partner are both back in full time work and dont rely on help, but would never judge or complain about the people who do need help. Maybe you should show a bit more compassion instead of stereo typing everyone as the same.

@keeley. Ever heard the saying "there but for the grace of God go I"? It means that you too could find yourself in an awful position, out of a job through ill health, redundancy, any number of unfortunate reasons and need the very help you are so disgusted at. I work full time, always have done but a number of years ago a nasty divorce saw me homeless and in financial difficulties and unable to access benefits because i technically still had a home (my name still on the mortgage). Had it not been for friends, colleagues and the Grace of God i dont know where id be. Dont tar those needing help with the same brush....you dont know their stories and i hope you never have your own story that leads you there. God bless

tramps need to get a job, no job no food

Reply Posted by J on Friday September 26 2014 at 16:51
So what about the people that are on minimum wage, have a family and a home to pay for and at the end of the week/month dont have enough money to feed their family, so are gratefull for the help of places like these! not everyone a "tramp" as you put it and sometimes need a helping hand. So basically the people who do go to work, but are on low income should also starve!

ppl who work shouldn't be going to places like this, the tight ******* government need to stop taxing the working class to death an put minimum wage up,there's no difference between working class and people on benefits it's wrong and it needs to change simple as that.

What utter trash you must be to look down on others simply because they're benefiting from what I consider to be an excellent initiative to combat poverty. Get off your high horse, take that silver spoon out of your arse and take a good look at yourself in the mirror.
You talk about people getting "educated" and getting a "proper job".. Yes, because it's evidently as easy as that, maybe some people had learning difficulties, maybe they have a disability that prevents them from getting a so-called "proper job".. You're such a judgemental b*tch and society has no place for people like you.
