Defiant Cinema Boss Welcomes Alhambra Competition

THE owners of Barnsley's town centre cinema say they're not frightened by news that a nine-screen multiplex is to be built at the Alhambra.

The Parkway's co-owner and manager, Rob Younger, 52, is confident its price structure and "intimate quality service" will continue to attract movie lovers of all ages.

He said: "I say to them bring it on because they cannot compete with our prices for tickets, drinks or snacks.

"They cannot compete with our local knowledge and commitment. They need to make massive profits - we don't."

It was Rob, from Darton, and a business partner who saved the town's only cinema in 2007 after it was sold by the Odeon in 2005 and closed down and boarded up.

Rob was overwhelmed by locals people's support on social media since the news of a rival was published.

"I was utterly delighted by so many people standing up to say how much they like the Parkway and how important it is that we remain open," he added.

"I hope that support remains and people show they care by coming here."
