A WARNING has been issued about a council tax con that is circulating the borough which lands unsuspecting residents with bills for claiming back apparent overpayments.

Barnsley Council says it has received a number of enquiries from council tax payers who are being canvassed about receiving refunds for overpaid council tax.

A spokesman said: "Householders are told that a substantial refund can be obtained because other residents in their street have received refunds following a reduction in the banding of their property.

"Experience suggests people can be misled into entering into costly administration arrangements with agents."

If you want to check the banding of your property, you can do so for free, by contacting the Valuation Office Agency on 0114 289 4600.
