PROTESTERS campaigning against cuts to free train travel for the elderly voiced their opinions outside Barnsley Interchange on Tuesday.

The Freedom Riders group - which wants free travel for the elderly to be restored in South Yorkshire - have been staging protests since the new rules came in on March 31.

The campaign has been running for several months and the protests have already seen the reinstatement of free travel in the region for disabled people.

Tuesday's latest action comes after three protests last week.

David Young, deputy interim director general of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, said in a statement: "Funding does not exist to further enhance the concessionary scheme.

"This has been made clear to the protesters, who initially said they welcomed the half-fare scheme.

"I would remind protesters that travelling on a train without a valid ticket is illegal, is theft and could result in arrest."

Why do they want free travel???
Is it cos they can't afford it???
Not many people can afford it especially if on low incomes so should they too be entitled to free travel?????

the elderly have never been so better off, people on low wages cant afford to pay for travel but who helps them, PAY like the rest of us.

So if you can no longer work and you don't have any money you should curl up and die? Becuase no one wants to pay

This costs 250,000 a year. Cut Councillor "allowances they costs us 800,000 grand a year or just get rid of three of the 9 people at the council that costs us 100k+ a year. Funny how money can be found for for some things and not for others. "Why benefit the many when you can benefit the few?" that should be out lanbour councils motto.

Diana Terris the Chief exec is thought to be on around 150,000 a year. Yet every one thinks this is fine. She doesn't even do a good job, her list of failures in her previous job were laughable.

@badun. My legs don't work well as well but I'm not classed as disabled and I'm not old either. So sorry to say that argument doesn't really work..

@badun. Surely they need to use their legs to get to the train/ bus station. So they must work OK and stop working OK when they reach train/bus station.

Pensioners get free travel = further rise in our fares to cover the costs

Reply Posted by bobby buttercrack on Wednesday August 20 2014 at 13:43
Yes rich, as soon as pensioners have to pay, we will see the fares come down striaght away. Talk absolute crap. Most pensioners ave paid into the system all their lives so I dont begrudge them a bit of free travel, they are fighting for us to ave this benefit when were older. I wish people would stop talking against normal everyday people sticking it to the striped suited self serving pigs that are the only beneficiary in all of this. The lovely bankers practically bankrupt this country and allowed to carry on regardless and the working normal folk get it in the neck to sort it but whats even worse than that is the normal folk who have the balls to stand up and say this just aint fare getting shot down by the people that also shud have some balls to do the same instead of taking Mr Cameron and his cronies side. The grabbing hands grab all they can, all for themselves after all....

lol i never said they would come down

The elderly can catch a bus for free anywhere my elderly relative say these people are just like bored kids who like causing trouble, this comes from an 82 yr old

Reply Posted by Liz on Wednesday August 20 2014 at 15:27
Maybe your 82 year old relative should be showing solidarity with the pensioners? They have this in other parts of the country, why not Barnsley? Where there's more pensioners living on the breadline. And what about the health benefits of being able to get out and about, and stay active and healthy? Surely that's better than being stuck in the house and putting further strain on the NHS!

For everyone moaning about them, one day you will be a pensioner and be able to enjoy the benefits of what they are fighting for! Some people can't see any further than their nose.

@kerry not sure how old you are but just looked at retirement ages,if you re under 23 to get a pension you will work to 69,70 or even higher its the higher bit that should bother a lot of the youngsters, rail and bus travel won't even exist as we know it today.

All the people who are complaining that they shouldn't get the fares free are the ones who will complain that people of former generations got free travel.

They deserve it, they have worked all their lifes not sat on their arses watching Jeremy Kyle with a special brew complaining about everything people do to try and change for the better and hitting the roof when your dole is stopped because you couldn't be arsed to go to interviews.

Lets have a look at their faces, not the back of their heads. Lets see who these people are who are acting in a belligerent and childish manner. If they are travelling on the railway without paying, having previously been repeatedly warned, they should be arrested and slung in a cell before appearing before the courts and a proper sentence passed. Just who do they think they are?

My relatives point is that these people are trying to say a trainis their only way of getting around and they will waste away if they want travel for free on it. How many of these people travel to the trail station on a bus for free!!

Reply Posted by sarah on Wednesday August 20 2014 at 16:21
Train station even.

Surely free travel should be judged on your income, not your age.

Reply Posted by Jim on Friday August 22 2014 at 08:14
Can some one explain how a few extra people on a normally half empty train that is running on it's designated route can cost £250000 a year? The majority of pensioners have fought for and paid taxes all their working lives. Is it wrong to give them free travel. I say no!!! It should be free national travel too. Those who are on benefits on here complaining that they shod have free travel too should get it as long as their going for a job interview!!!! Not just so they can go shopping with my (the tax payers) money.

please forgive me if I have got this wrong but don't the elderly get free bus travel? and if so then surely the answer is to get the bus instead of the train isn't it,im not against free travel for pensioners im just struggling to understand what all the fuss is about, its not like there isn't an alternative to the train

Reply Posted by Workinglass on Saturday August 23 2014 at 23:36
I agree with changes to an extent why when the disabled and vast majority of elderly get mobility allowance which can be as high as 200.00 per month to travel with ease still expect ti travel fee on bus/trains etc? Maybe they one or the other but not both if they are well and able to travel via public transport then dont need mobility! Ive seen the protests complete lack of respect for other transport users and quickly losing respect from the general public
