Elderly Residents Continue Rail Protests

Monday August 11 2014

PROTESTERS campaigning against cuts to free train travel for the elderly have started the first of three protests planned for this week.

The Freedom Riders group - which wants free travel for the elderly to be restored in South Yorkshire - have been protesting since the new rules came in on March 31.

They staged their first of this week at 11am outside the newly-reopened Barnsley Interchange, after the transport hub was closed over the weekend due to damage caused by heavy rain.

A further two protests - on Wednesday and Friday - will also start at 11am.

The campaign has been running for several months and the protests have already seen the reinstatement of free travel in the region for disabled people.

Do you back their protests? Have your say below.

Protests from March 31st won back travel concessions for disabled and partial victory for elderly. More protests have led to talks. If we had done nothing we would have got nothing.

Good on you, only wish I was able to join them.
People who have worked all their life, only to find the goalposts moved, when they need help most, deserve some concessions and this should be fully re-instated.

Whilst I support the freedom riders in their campaign for free train travel, I do not think the elderly are the most deserving of free travel on public transport. Children, young people and low income households of working age all have lower incomes than the elderly above the variable women's pension age.

People could get free travel at 60, but soon pension age will be 69, possibly even higher.

We need free travel for all. People with lower incomes need it the most. Especially children who cannot work due to the law, and those with lower minimum wages due to the law, carers volunteers, people looking for work etc..

Free travel for the elderly & disabled is ultimately a subsidy for the private bus & train companies, but it does have the benefit of keeping services running for the paying passengers. The only problem is, so many people who have to pay for 'public' transport, cannot afford to use public transport in the first place.

We really need to nationalise public transport and make it free for all.

It is very misleading when people come out with the "worked all my life" argument. Free travel is a recent benefit, so nobody can say they have worked all those years for it; when they started work it was a benefit no one had. Moreover, the government scheme was for free bus travel, there's no god given right to rail travel.

The scheme is designed to remove barriers by making travel to see friends, appointments and local shops freely available, thereby reducing social isolation. Train travel is not needed for that in almost all cases. It's just people who choose to go to Meadowhall who are now complaining.

Everyone has had to feel the pain resulting from the previous Labour government's mismanagement of the economy. It is quite right that senior pass holders are expected to contribute if they choose to travel by train. I do not support them in this campaign at all.

I fully support the comments made by matt. The so-called 'Freedom Riders' are obviously going through a second childhood and acting like spoilt children. They should be grateful for the concessions which they are benefitting from.

If they are repeatedly travelling on the railway and not paying a fare, they should be arrested, locked up and fined.

Yes, I agree with myself too.

First of all-

I work full time on a low wage and I have to pay bus/train fares and full bills,

why on earth pensioners moan all the time, FREE TRAVEL AND MONEY TOWARDS FUEL BILLS, whilst living in there cosy bungalow and a car on the drive..

stop moaning and pay your way , everybody is having to cut back..

They make my blood boil. There is no reason why they should get more concessions, if they do it has to be paid for by taking money from somewhere else.

Everyone has been affected by the recession and the cuts that have been made as a result. Wages & in-work benefits have had 5 years of either being frozen or going up by 1% while pensions have gone up by either the inflation rate or 2.5% minimum. There are lots of services I would restore before giving to pensioners.

Today's pensioners are more well off than any future pensioners will ever be. They have benefited from cheap property prices, final salary pension schemes & generous benefits - all of which will never be seen again. They have more disposable income than young families who are in full time work, and the next generation will have to work until they are almost 70.

Congratulations to them for winning the restoration of most of the travel concessions but they do not need or deserve further travel concessions any more than anyone else and should stop making a nuisance of themselves, even if for no other reason than that the police have better things to do.

Rant over!

I like the way you go on like you'll never be pensioners one day, it's all THEM. So. THEY'VE all got cosy bungalows and a car in the drive?!? really? what about THEM that die in winter because they can't afford the heating?

Reply Posted by really on Monday August 11 2014 at 18:31
I thought the pensioners got help towards the fuel bills and plus most who die have plenty of money but to tight to spend. FACT

No where else does anyone get free train travel , there's plenty of other rate payers living just outside the schemes area who get Nowt . If you live in a village or small town there ain't even buses running that you can use your bus pass on so you have to pay for taxis to get anywhere. If these selfish louts paid there way we might even be able to get a bus service out in the sticks

Reply Posted by Tom on Monday August 11 2014 at 22:12
Other places do get free rail travel, London is one of them.

Some in the sticks get buses and they are heavily subsidised.

Subsidy in urban areas and between then must surely be of economic advantage. It would make sense to extend free travel. And instead of private profit for the few funded by public subsidy, we might as well nationalise the lot and have proper public transport, that can be used by everyone.

Looks like the Sun readers have moved on from the unemployed to the pensioners. I wonder who will be next in their sights, the disabled perhaps?

Reply Posted by Gotta Ava Moanatakim on Monday August 11 2014 at 20:11
@kim I see jealousy has reared its ugly head you can always get yourself a private pension instead of moaning about how bad you feel your treated I bet there's enough left for the M.Ps and the bankers so if your a little bit worried about your pension pot try what the sliver surfers are doing protesting and get your self down to ten downing st and protest

Reply Posted by Mick on Wednesday August 13 2014 at 12:11
By fought for this country I assume you mean WW2 and not Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone etc. Some of our young men and women today have been fighting for this country longer than the entirity of WW2 - where's their free travel? Not many of these Freedom Riders look in their 90's to me?

Reply Posted by Red Optimist on Monday August 11 2014 at 22:35
Yes, I regularly spot a couple of well known left wing agitators amongst the mob. They also make a nuisance of themselves at other demonstrations in town.

Reply Posted by hmm on Monday August 11 2014 at 22:44
Mortgage paid off. Private pension paying out. State pension paying out. Fuel paid for every winter. Discounts at most leisure places and complaining that they apparently need free travel too.

One of the people involved in the freedom rides has just purchased a brand new car cash, has an income of almost 2000 a month in pensions and lives in a 4 bed house with no mortgage yet was going crazy the other week talking about his right to free travel.

Reply Posted by Matt on Monday August 11 2014 at 22:44
This isn't about picking on the elderly nor disrespecting them. It's simply expecting them to pay for something they have no statutory right to receive for free and choose to use. And I fully agree, the loudest are also loud on many other subjects.

I remember when one of them was arrested at Sheffield. Breaking the law, appalling behaviour and yet somehow exempt from the consequences? I think not.

I concur with myself too.

the train is running anyway so i cant see the big deal, its not as if its costiong extra fuel or anything. . Maybe some sort of card that allows 10 or so free journeys between non busy hours could work, keep both sides happy. just an idea.

Reply Posted by Lauren on Tuesday August 12 2014 at 14:07
Anon - What a stupid and ridiculous comment. You may as well say

Taxi only 2 people using let the pensioners stand on the rank and jump in . not to worry it is not going to cost anymore fuel has the taxi is going that way anyway.. DER

Give them free travel in private car as long as its going there way.

WHAT EVER NEXT ANON

As I can count myself now as one of the silver brigade, may I just say that NO, I have NOT got and do NOT want a bus pass, NO I do not want free train travel etc., and I would not demean myself to expect anything for nothing.

Well said above@ the country is on its @rse and why should the pensioners travel FREE. pay like the rest of us.. Disgraceful has most of the pensioners are better off than the families that work full time.

Reply Posted by True Red on Tuesday August 12 2014 at 15:25
@do one like I said earlier no subsides for any one no cut price tickets no day riders no weekly or monthly price cut tickets no loyalty tickets one price for all and if a bus or train is taken out of service for lack of passengers never mind let them walk to work or to the hospitals cancel all subsidies for transport and by the way lets also stop people who get on the bus who haven't got the right change kick em off
