Council Set To Clamp Down On Blue Badge Misuse

Friday July 11 2014

FINES of up to £1,000 could be issued from September in a bid to clamp down on people who misuse the disabled blue badge scheme.

Cabinet members will consider approving new enforcement and prosecution measures against those who misuse the scheme on July 16.

If the report is approved, officers will be able to investigate anonymous reports of fraud or misuse of blue badges and take legal action against those committing an offence.

To identify the level of misuse in the town - where there are currently around 13,500 badges - a two-day joint initiative was carried out with South Yorkshire Police.

A total of 51 badges were inspected, with eight penalty notices being issued to people who were displaying a badge without the holder being present.

One blue badge was returned to the council after the family member admitted it belonged to their deceased relative.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokesperson for communities, said: "Using a stolen or fake blue badge, or allowing a friend or family to use them, is fraud.

"It prevents drivers with a genuine need from being able to park close to shops and amenities they need, making life much more difficult for them."

The new powers could come into force from September 1.

I do the odd bit of car park work at a local school and I always see people either misusing disabled badges or using them after they have expired. Any reports made are not followed up by whoever is in charge of issuing blue badges. No wonder people are having a field day using the badges illegally.

Simple anyone found misusing the blue badge then revoke their badge permanently.

At long last its about time we clamped down on the mostly abusive Tenerife gang, for far too long people have taken the pi.s,also can we ensure the council makes sure we stop the attitude of sitting in the car and waiting this makes my blood boil.

Give the traffic wardens power of enforcement which they do not have at the moment

I do agree that the blue badge should only be used by the person it is designated to but now I have seen an increase by other drivers swearing and abusing the driver and passenger who genuinely are issued the blue badge I don't know if there is a misconception by many able bodied people against the disabled agitated by the Tory press but some genuine disabled are frightened to show never mind use there blue badge

Every time someone uses a blue badge and shouldn't should realise you are robbing the council and the place you call home of vital parking revenue, the same place that people knock weekly on here.1.40 times by 1000 blue badges equals 1400 lost how many hanging baskets ect would this buy.

In my opinion anyways there should be free parking for all in the town centre this is one reason why people go to the big supermarket chains and the town centre is in declining who wants a £60 or is it£100 pound fine for being five minutes late, any new car parks built the cost could be offset by the extra visitors that would shop in the town centre so producing extra revenue if people are abusing the blue badge system they should be fined but most disabled have other drivers and often leave there cards in the glove compartment if the drive abusers the system when the disabled person is not there why should the disabled person be punished for trusting the driver

Name and shame the abusers. It's about time the supermarkets etc. did something too.

There are lots of issues subject to abuse, my bugbear is the misuse of crutches, some people need them and some people just take the mick, they practically run with them.
