Town Centre Refurbishment To Be Officially Launched

Wednesday July 9 2014

THE 11-month project of refurbishing the town centre's streets will be officially launched on Monday.

Coun Roy Miller, Coun Sir Steve Houghton and representatives from North Midland Construction PLC will take part in a slab-laying ceremony at 11.30am on the junction of Regent Street and Hanson Street.

Work actually began at the end of June, with improvements to be carried out on Eldon Street, Regent Street South, Hanson Street, Royal Street, Regent Street, Eastgate, Market Hill and Church Street's footpath.

It includes paving in natural Yorkstone and granite, new street lighting and new street furniture. Roads will also be resurfaced with improved crossing facilities.

The scheme, known as the Urban Centre Infrastructure project, is taking place thanks to a significant funding contribution from the European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007-2013.

Are you happy to see Barnsley town centre's streets being improved? Have your say below.

Still wunt mind a blue bin first though. Oh and a lawn mower run over local field where we now have a meadow instead would be nice.

The paving looks really nice around the town hall, maybe now you could persuade the scruffy shop owners to spruce up their walls a bit now or the whole thing looks pointless. Funky Buddha, Walkabout, White Bear, Londoner take a look at your outer walls, covered in sick, beer, etc... a wash with the jet wash wouldn't go a miss. When the college is finally built this area will be the best part of the town if those that own the properties around it pull their finger out.

Cp I think it should be compulsory, how hard is it to get a mop and bucket out one a week and get windows and signs cleaned. Polyanna and eatons always looks spotless on the outside. Just hjaving a clean shop front makes a lot of difference. some just need a paint a wash and some tlc.

Couldn't agree more hanging baskets flowers back to nature, the arcade should be painted gold and black the red looks crap, then outside seated areas hanging baskets ect its surprising how that would lift the whole feel of it this area is an important part of Barnsley history, the Bengt harrals clock what would it cost to paint it gold and black and get someone on a daily basis to wind it up,its little things like this that lift the area and distract ones eyes form the 70s carbuncles.

My mate worked on recent paving around Town Hall, which was carried out by Barnsley MBC. North Midland have just started..................where's the praise for Barnsley lads?

Houghton, miller, labour council but yet get a private firm in to do the jobs that our own highway department can do! Not be long and they'll be privatising every bit of the council.
Ukip in disguise.

Yes, but if the council workforce did the job it would take twice as long and cost about five times as much. That's why it's been given to a private company.

Why are contractors doing the work?
Can't this question be put to these councillors?

Town is looking good now and will be even better when the work is complete. A poster mention pubs in town not doing enough to make the area better. Whoever owns Good Fellas on Regent Street needs to do something. That place is an eyesore. The same can be said with the old salvation Army building on Wellington Street. That place needs condemning.

A few slabs and a lick of paint won't cure the plague of Drug addicts, screaming obscene winos, drug dealers peddling in broad daylight, Ignorance and filthy foreign beggars. The place will remain a dump that folk avoid visiting. BMBC can't be trusted either.
