A FEMALE crane driver who never missed a shift in 39 years' service has just celebrated her 100th birthday.

Irene Leigh, who still lives independently in her own bungalow at Ward Green, spent most of her working life at David Brown's in Penistone.

"There was just me and one other girl," said Irene, who celebrated her milestone with a party at the Grey Horse pub in Old Town last Wednesday.

"I used to have to walk across a girder, from one crane to the other, 70 foot up in the air. If I'd have fallen, I shouldn't have known anything about it.

"I liked it and I only gave up because the tax man was taking too much off me. I wrote him a nice letter saying 'I'm not working for the tax man'.

"I did it for 39 years and I never missed a shift."

She has two sons from her marriage to Maurice, 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

What a fantastic woman. She has put most of us to shame, and so proud. Best wishes Irene.
