Council Apologises After Bin Collection Issues

Wednesday June 18 2014

BARNSLEY Council is continuing to experience problems with waste and recycling collections.

The council has apologised for any inconvenience caused, and stated that unemptied bins will be collected.

Not all rounds of collections have been able to be met on the designated days so secondary rounds have had to take place.

A council spokesperson said: "The advice is to leave any uncollected bins out and teams will catch up the following day."

The 'teething problems' have surfaced after a dramatic shake-up in the way the council's waste management team works. You can read about that here.

Has your bin been collected? Have your say below.

It is a joke, had to leave bins out all over last weekend, as for teething problems that is an excuse these collections have been going on long enough to iron out any "teething" problems. They would jump on people straight away if we with held council tax payment.

They will be collected the next day? My brown bin will have been out 2 weeks on Friday... Same as the rest of the street and it is still not empty. Beyond a joke

It's all very wellthecouncil apologising but what are they gung to do about it ???
Whilst I appreciate the council have had to make cutbacks and undoubtedly like other companies have had to make staff cuts, this "shake up" if ware management & recycling clearly is not working.
It's very clear from all the comments on both the BMBC & WAB Facebook pages that it is resulting in fewer people recycling (exact opposite if what we should be trying achieve!), more fly tipping is evident and how much is it all costing????
So BMBC this saved money & resources and improved recycling did it........really????
Get someone on the job who knows what they are doing and quickly!!!

not good enough Barnsley council - apologies don't sort out the problems Maybe you should reduce the amount of council tax we pay for your failings?

Reply Posted by Dale on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 10:41
Every week my bin dosent get emptied in time usually 3 days later! Still waiting for our replacement bigger bins aswell, they expect us to re-cycle for free so they earn money, so we are doing half there jobs but still pay same tax!

Reply Posted by cp on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 10:42
Is it just me? But the old system worked fine even if they reduced the amount of collections to cut costs why change the bins and days?

Reply Posted by Hilda on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 16:04
the old system worked perfectly fine for me Bin WAS emptied on time and also recycled as much as I could . New system always days late street is also covered in paper which blows out of silly sacks or kids from school throw all over. Council other week stated everybody was happy with the new system WELL MILLER YOU DONT READ FACEBOOK OR WAB.. STAND DOWN AND LET SOMEBODY DO THE JOB. YOU CAN NOT..

do people know how much council tax goes to refuse disposal

Reply Posted by leanne on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 10:48
It's been over 8 months since my brown and blue bins have been emptied! When I phone them all they do is note it as a missed collection and then nothing! I've emailed and got nothing back so it's a joke. #gettingdumpedontownhallsteps!

Not happy with the bin situation ATM! Not one of my bins have been emptied over past 3 weeks! You need to get this sorted because we have no room for rubbish, it will cause vermin!

Reply Posted by Gav on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 10:54
Last week a blue bin was set on fire due to the fact that it wasn't collected in cudworth

Reply Posted by Jo on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 10:59
Not had any issues at all in Gawber, it's complicated having to check what bin when and could do with bigger bottle and cardboard ones but they have collected on time or day late for bank holidays

Reply Posted by claire on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 11:04
Every week is the same. Bins left un-emptied. Making it a obstacle course for the elderly and pram users! Think its time to pull your socks up and do something about it. Whoever thought this new routine up needs sacking! Its a absolute disgrace Barnsley council. And as for (TEETHING) problems. Its gone on long enough! Don't see why we should pay you council tax when you can't even do your job properly

MY brown bin not been picked up after getting new one and my green one still sat outside gate for a week

Reply Posted by rainbow on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 11:16
Put the brown bin inside the grey bin then the following week put the blue bin in. Problem solved in two week.!!

Suppose the bins will get emptied in "Millertime" Councillor Roy strikes again - can't he get anything right? ps Am still awaiting a reply from the email I sent 3 months ago. Don't they care? You do the Maths!

Reply Posted by kim on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 11:24
It's a complete and utter joke. Let's make cut backs and then have to pay overtime because we can't collect the bins on time. We should stop paying our council tax and then see how quickly the problem gets resolved. Why don't they just revert back to the old system which obviously worked.

Reply Posted by suzanne on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 11:40
Why did.they change what wasn't broke.....get a grip Bmbc we paying council tax..I can soon leave my council.tax over weekend and pay late too....

It's a shambles at the moment, but suggestions of withholding council tax is not the answer, all that will result in is that your direct debit or whatever payment plan that you have will be terminated and the outstanding amount will become payable and you will receive a statutory fine with court costs.Pay your bills and channel your anger into something positive instead of whining about bin collections being a little behind schedule

Reply Posted by JohnR on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 13:56
The problem is that they are not a little behind schedule. They seem to manage the grey bins but all the rest have never been collected on the correct day. The answer seems to be to stick it all in the grey bin and forget the recycling, I bet the mayor has had his collected on the correct day. Your comments do not instill goodwill from Barnsley residents who by the pay your wages.

Our grey bins were not emptied for over a week after their designated collection day.

I lodged a complaint on their website after waiting two days for them to be collected, but got absolutely no response. (They were very quick to respond when it was something I had not done properly!!!!)

they were finally collected on Monday this week, but with no apology or explanation in response to my complaint! (until I saw this article)

It's a false, my dad lives in a bungalow on a little close. Every time it comes to green bin day they do every street around them and miss theirs. Sometimes they come back on the sat. Other times they don't come back at all.

Reply Posted by tony on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 12:20
Stop laying off bin men and start sacking management who quite obviously can't do their jobs.

Reply Posted by Susan Quinn on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 12:50
My green bin not emptied for 5 weeks been left out u wouldn't mind but im on a main road and the houses opposite have had theirs emptied twice now something not right

The recycling consultant brought in to reorganise waste collection is costing the folk of Barnsley 12k a month yes £12,000 a month WAB should investigate this & get some answers.

Reply Posted by Dave on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 13:24
I agree with everything that's been sed only answer u get lorry on its way or leave it out b empty tomorrow I'll bet our international friends complain b empty straight away

Reply Posted by jenny on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 13:36
Still waiting on bigger bins, white bags and it would be good if they collected the bleeding things on the day they say they will turn up instead of 3 days later. Teething problems, what a joke, you've had long enough to sort it out and how about delivering the bigger bins before you start another new collection regime. All these bins that are stood with rubbish in them will start to attract rats and mice and then the residents will get bitched at for the problem, not the council. It's getting beyond a joke. I'm waiting for the day when my bin gets knocked over and all the rubbish thrown about by idiots, then I will be complaining like never before, because you can be certain it won't be the councils problem, it will be mine!!

Reply Posted by Nannabeth on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 13:42
Problems are with recycling bins and then trying to get action when calling refuse collection. I e-mailed my 3 local councillors in frustration a few weeks ago, questioning unmanageable size of rounds and insufficient operatives/vehicles. Replies from two of them resulted in bins getting emptied the next day, along with apologies and an admission that all was not well but it would be looked at. Marginally better with recycling since then.

Reply Posted by me on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 14:05
Mmmm, cant quite believe the mayor would be commenting on this and if it is indeed you then your comments a bit dodgy to say the least if you want to stay in office, maybe getting rid of your position would be the way to save money? Sort the bins!its not rocket science, empty a bin into a lorry on the day you're supposed to or people WILL start to forget to pay their council tax, summons or not,if everyone does it think of the impact.

My white bags not been emptied since they started with them, we live on a main road and the bins get stuffed with all sorts because we have to put them out over night for the next morning then when bin men come see other stuff in bins thats not the correct recycling they don't empty it and leave a note saying not emptied as we are not recycling properly . ???????????? what do we do

Reply Posted by Dale on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 14:57
Yet again bin not emptied on day it should be!

I have a weekly phone call to waste manegment, to ask why my bins are not emptied grey bin been on pavement a month now , and they have the cheek to tell me that the bin men came back and it was not there, they tell porkys as well, think best thing is just keep leaving bins on pavement, and just maybe they will get emptied , it's a shambles, still waiting for new bigger bins since February lol.

Is it my memory is the person responsible for the new collection regime no longer working for bmbc. It seems to me at the time of announcing the change Councillor Mr Miller was never out of the media with his promises of a better recycling system. Not seen much comment from him lately perhaps he should follow his colleague onto further recycling pastures.

Reply Posted by jason taylor on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 16:25
Hi i wish they would empty the brown bins every 2 weeks instead of every 3 weeks whats that bout they ask us to recycle then when we do we cant get any more in bins cause the council wont empty them Ahhhh so frustrating some one help Please coucnil are crap but oh lets just dig up a road for no reason cause they gt plenty of money for that ???

Reply Posted by baz on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 16:25
WAB does any of the bmbc councillors ever reply to the comments on this subject. If not why aren't you asking the questions.

Next time there's a local election put as much effect into going to vote than moaning about bins.

Yes my bins don't get emptied. Our local Councillor laugh at me when we was on about bin collection.

Until I said I would consider standing against him in our next election comes up.

That took a massive smile of his face when I guy said I would triple his recent votes

Still waiting on blue bin that I ordered in January. All I get is there is a delay and could be up to 12 weeks. Erm can they not count it's well past 12 weeks now. Also keep missing our road for recycling. Brown bins were out 7 weeks last time before emptied.

I have been waiting for a blue bin and a brown bin since xmas because the bins I have are not big enough. I have to store my cardboard, plastic and cans in the garage its looks like a rubbish tip in there. Sick of the council making changes and not helping us DO SOMETHING NOW PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply Posted by Mick on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 19:17
I got a new large brown bin but they didn't take the old small one away. Have asked them loads of times, they say they won't collect it until all the new bins have been delivered. Doesn't make sense, surely if they collect old bins they can give them to people who need them.

Reply Posted by stan on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 20:30
I've stopped recycling now, they have changed bins, days (never on time) so I just chuck it in the grey bin, but I missed paying council tax and they where straight on it

Reply Posted by rick on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 22:56
Our green bin has only been emptied once on the designated day since they changed the system. Normally emptied the following day but it has run into 2 days as well. Sat at the top of my drive now waiting to be emptied, they missed again today. The daft thing is they drive passed and don't empty it, go figure.

These guys are a shambles, we should be use to it by now they have been in charge long enough.

Their service now is shocking. Its like a game guessing when they will turn up and what day. Last week we put Brown bin out and as far as i am aware is never got collected. Usually they are very early. This week Grey bin was done in the afternoon so we thought they weren't coming again. They would be straight onto us if we didn't pay our Council tax on time.

As bins are being left all over the place and some have been set on fire, one causing a house fire,I'm wondering if the council should be looking at their duty of care policy. The bins are left out as and when the council has said they will be emptied, if they arnt emptied and the idiot in cudworth who keeps setting them alight causes a death, where will the blame lie? Council insurance?

Reply Posted by AngryBarnsleyResident on Thursday June 19 2014 at 10:11
Why not, instead of shouting on here, do we not all gather outside the town hall and start a much needed revolution. Off with their heads, seems to work(ed) in France, why not here

Cut Cut Cut, and Houghton still bleats on how badly done to the council is...

Funnily enough Houghton hasn't taken a pay CUT and last year had the sheer CHEEK to claim £30k "expenses" on top of his already vastly inflated salary which earned him MORE money than the Prime Minister!

I STILL cannot fathom out why the good people of our town vote these idiots in year after year.

Paid Director of Barnsley Hospital, Councillor for Cudworth, etc, etc, he sits on about 6 boards. I think he must own a time machine because mathematically there is no way he can fulfill his hourly duties. No doubt he gets paid twice for some meetings. Are we getting our moneys worth. He said last month that 97% of bin collections were on time. Ha Ha Barnsley is like the human animal farm. All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.

Bins are always emptied at least a day late, my mother can b waiting up to a week or so on some collections to be made because they don't know the route & fail to go round the back of the houses (which is where the bins have ALWAYS) been collected from) I've also been waiting 9 weeks (maybe longer) for my larger blue/brown bins & if I ring to ask where they are I can NEVER get through.

What about having a designated area for all the recycle dumpster size bins in each area, and we just take our rubbish and drop it in them, then we would have no need for any bins, so that would mean the end of dragging bins in and out, and having bins all over the footpaths and roads.

the brown bins in Blenheim Road and St Georges Road have still not been emptied since Friday and they are still out there waiting to be done. I'm not bringing mine back as there may be the slight chance of them coming while its in my back yard. There is no where to report it on their web site either
