Big Plans For Town Centre's Redevelopment

Friday June 13 2014

THE multi-storey car park and semi-open market will be flattened as part of the redevelopment of the town centre.

The Jumble Lane level crossing could also be confined to history, replaced by a raised walkway.

There will also be a large public square, with outdoor stalls and space for concerts and 'big screen' events, and a new 'grand entrance' into the indoor market, possibly including a glass canopy.

The £41 million redevelopment plans were announced in January but latest developments have only just been revealed.

Council chiefs want to make Barnsley more like it was in the 1960s, with better pedestrian routes through the town with better access to the market.

Coun Roy Miller, spokesman for development, said the plans were progressing well and feedback from traders and shoppers consulted was excellent.

He said: "We've got the money, we're in a position to go ahead and get this done. We will achieve a better Barnsley."

Are you happy the much talked about plans are finally going ahead? What would you like to see in the town centre? Have your say below.

Barnsley the dynamic forward looking town, looking back to 1960's for inspiration. No wonder it's dying on its ar*e. Complete poverty of ambition from a defective Council. What's wrong with looking forward to a town ready for 2060?

go back to the 1960s - jeez aren't the grey prefab buildings that we have now from that era. What a forward thinking bunch we have at the helm

Can't even run an adequate refuse service so not much chance of developing the town centre into anything special

Miller again I remember Barnsley in the 1960's it certainly wasn't pedestrianised and was still a dump. £41 million has come from where thought bmbc had no money are they borrowing it and paying back at huge interest rates. Forget it bmbc and go away Mr Miller

I think we should flatten the council chambers and get shut of the idiots who pretend to run the council.

Reply Posted by polly on Thursday June 12 2014 at 17:05
best idea yet mike. once we sort the greed ridden councillors out then the town will stand a chance. sadly it's not going to happen tho is it!!

I wouldn't worry anybody. They've been talking about redeveloping the town centre & markets for 20 years - remember them closing the Kendry Street offices for redevelopment? Remember the phantom cinema to be built in place of the old council tax offices? Remember the promised development after Littlewoods and BHS closed? Remember the promise of a Debenhams every other year?

It will simply never happen

Why is everybody so negative, for Gods sake some folk just have to complain about everything, what's up with you moaning pieces of crap, why not be happy about something good happening In Your own Town? I bet the majority of those moaning are folk who have never worked a day in their lives and thrive off laying back and doing nowt. I work pay my way and am happy to see my taxes go towards a good cause,

Lee, If you can't express an opinion without being personal then go elsewhere. Where do you get off calling people you don't know "pieces of crap"? How can you assume a whole group of people have "never worked a day"?
If you haven't the intelligence to string together a logical argument then don't bother.

The Reason people are being negative are because we have heard it all before - for about 20 years, as illustrated by The Walrus. I and many others can be critical of Barnsley Council as I pay for them year in year out and receive only empty promises, incompetence and disapointment. Oh and I've been out of work for the sum of 4 months in the last 19 years and I will keep complaining until on these forums until I am satisfied.

Because we have heard it all before Lee. BMBC are a shambles, I have no faith in them whatsoever.

Just remind me guys, how many £ stores and bookies will the town centre hold?

Would love to know how much money has already been wasted on meetings upon meetings to discuss what to do. This seems to of been going on forever with no visual action being done!!!

I think they should spend it on the hospital.

Reply Posted by Andrew on Saturday June 14 2014 at 09:34
Unfortunately they can not do that. The money has been identified for specific projects and as it is BMBC money it can not be given to the hospital.

Reply Posted by Ray on Saturday June 14 2014 at 06:26
Anyone that visits the town think its a joke as we have nothing. Bmbc have the money they say, so no more talk just get on with the work you have been promising for years.

You'll find the internet much more sympathetic to your story if you "caps lock OFF" and write like real person.

My wife had a stall on the semi open market and this redevelopment is very much need to inject a new lease of life into the town centre and markets.
I 100% back the council in this redevelopment you sometimes have to spend a bit of money to make some

Reply Posted by TT on Monday June 16 2014 at 08:46
I too had a stall on the market. It is in dire need of some drastic action, the trouble is that action still isn't coming fast enough. This latest announcement that BMBC were going to manage the project on their own came in February and still no work has commenced. In fact there won't be any work commencing till next year, or so they say!

All these compaints about Barnsley MBC but they keep voting them in.???

Reply Posted by dale on Monday June 16 2014 at 11:31
Your right there rainbow. You stick a red flag up and the idiots of barnsley vote for labour. Surely if people were that bothered, they'd vote for someone like I did but Barnsley is full of stupid people so we'll not get very far....

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Monday June 16 2014 at 12:04
Problem is which set of idiots do we vote for?
Labour - Tory Lite
Lib Dums - Laughing stock
Tory - Rich party for rich people only interested in demonising the working class and keeping them subjected to a live of poverty.

Yes dale you are right, anyone in Barnsley and the rest of the country who voted UKIP is indeed stupid.

I remember way back when bus station was announced and all the other plans, the bowling / cinema complex supposed to be built where some of markets are and the old building across from gala, never happened there's been loads of planned developments and nothing ever happens, i'm not a negative person and I love change, I remember looking forward to the new cinema n bowling complex ect, but like people say theres no confidence in the council at the moment, and as for thinking back to 1960's well you may as well board up the center, Make a town thats fit for the future !!!

Did anyone notice the largest global recession in five generations a few years ago or did that pass everyone by. You're not going to get private investment in that sort of climate which is why I assume they're self funding a smaller project now.

Other town and cites haven't had any problems Dave, just poor little Barnsley. We have been promised a new town centre for the last 10+ years form multiplex cinemas to Debenhams, etc, etc.

Bmbc like to talk a good game but never deliver. Proof is in the pudding.

Reply Posted by Dave on Tuesday June 17 2014 at 17:04
Yes, other towns and cities have had problems - it was a global recession . Suggest you look up the problems Sheffield and Bradford have had to name just two. Sure there are plenty more examples if you do some research.

It's just that Sir Steve and his colleagues were 'slow out of the traps' as per usual. The town centre redevelopment should have taken place well before the Labour government induced UK recession. The time for Barnsley to capitalise was when all the money was 'slopping about' pre 2008. Clearly the people of our town deserve better than what we are served up by the current council. I just wish we had dynamic leadership and senior officers who were really interested in the town and were not simply here for their more than generous salaries and other benefits.

Blackburn, Burnley, Oldham, Bradford, Dewsbury, Halifax to name but a few!

For the record, Blackburn makes Barnsley look like Beverly Hills!

Reply Posted by sid on Tuesday June 17 2014 at 14:07
How many times has Bmbc promised to deliver a town centre that Barnsley folk can be proud of?

You can't blame people for been sceptical, anyone for a Tuscan village?

Reply Posted by @sid on Wednesday June 18 2014 at 18:53
what have barnlsey folk got to be proud of, rubbish place with rubbish people.

As long as the redevelopment brings some decent shops to the area I am all for it. Make it a lung cancer free zone. (No Smoking).
