Hospital Must Do All It Can, Says MP

BARNSLEY East MP Michael Dugher has told the town's hospital must take "all action necessary" to recover from a £7.5 million hole in its finances.

Health watchdog Monitor has told bosses to draw up a plan of action, detailing how they will get the trust back into some form of stability.

An investigation into the hospital's financial irregularities was launched in April, with Monitor finding a 'wider issue' in how it was being run.

"The hospital must take all action necessary to rectify the position they are in," Mr Dugher said.

"Their commitment to a two-year turnaround plan, their willingness to work closely with Monitor and to act upon their advice is welcome. The welfare of patients is paramount."

In the last 18 months, the hospital breached the national target of seeing 95 per cent of its accident and emergency patients within four hours, but the hospital's chief executive Diane Wake outlined the progress it has made since the damning findings were published.

"We met the national four-hour target in March, April and May following changes to the way we work," Diane said. "We are now consistently meeting the target on a day-to-day basis and are working to sustain this over the longer term.

"We would like to reassure patients that quality patient care remains a priority. We are continuing to provide the same high level of care our patients need and deserve."

Hhahahahah another idiot blaming labour for the countries woes.

Funny that the Tories have spent MORE money in the last 4 years than Labour did in 13 don't you think?

There is no austerity for the rich elite is there?

You've only to look at mid staffs to see what a great job they did. MHD May be safe in their hands , but the patients certainly weren't

Sir Steve Houghton is a paid executive director of the Barnsley NHS trust, perhaps he will be able to solve the problem and let us know what went wrong and who's to blame.???

Has some Director or so been allegedly been suspended in the last week or so in this fiasco. What does surprise me is how can you sweep this sort of mess up day after day. Surely financial records of an institution this big are scrutinised on a very regular basis. I'm baffled how this has got past so many people paid so much Money to police.

I wonder if anyone can tell me how sir Steve houghton has the time to be on the board at barnsley hospital what with his other duties such as being the leader of a failing council and also being a councillor at cudworth I can barely manage to keep up with my job and a couple of hobbies, maybe he doesn't sleep

Rainbow, you seem to know your onions surely this shows up if he is audited on any of these commitees about how he can actually fulfil his time obligations, I would expect just being the leader of the council would mean he's at least 50-60 hours
