THIS week marks 70 years since the landing of allied soldiers on the beaches of Normandy and the subsequent attack against the German army during World War Two.

Lt Eric Taylor, from Thurnscoe, took part in the D-Day attack and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government - a medal for outstanding bravery.

Lt Taylor was commended for his courage when laying lines under heavy shell fire during 1944.

The medal is now on display in the Town Hall along with a silver cigarette case given to Lt Taylor by the Thurnscoe British Legion to celebrate his achievements.

Experience Barnsley is still looking for local people to contribute photographs, objects and stories to the museum to help commemorate Barnsley’s involvement in the First World War, and will be hosting an exhibition from September 22.
