Witness Appeal After Smash Closes M1

Monday March 12 2012

A CAR accident which left two people with serious injuries closed the M1 for several hours yesterday (March 11.)

Police are appealing for witnesses after a silver Lexus RX 300 spun out of control on the section between Junction 36 and 37, and crossed the central barrier onto the southbound carriageway where it was involved in a head-on collision with a black Vauxhall Meriva.

Debris from the collision struck a third vehicle, a red VW Transporter, causing minor damage. The incident led to the closure of both carriageways for around six hours.

The Lexus driver, a 20-year-old Nottingham man, had to be freed from his car before being airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary. He was detained overnight in a serious condition with a suspected broken leg and internal injuries.

The Vauxhall driver, a 60-year-old Durham man, was taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield with a suspected broken toe. Although his condition was described as serious, the 60-year-old was not detained in hospital.

Officers are particularly keen for witnesses who saw the Lexus leave the northbound carriageway but anyone with information about the incident should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 518 of Sunday, 11 March.
