Barnsley Campaign To Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

Wednesday March 7 2012

By Louise McNicholas

A NEW awareness campaign has been launched in Barnsley to help reduce the number of older women dying from breast cancer.

Barnsley is one of only seven areas in England to be chosen to take part in the ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign to increase early awareness of breast cancer symptoms for women over 70.

In Barnsley, around 45 women over 70 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

A NHS Barnsley spokesman said: "Older women with breast cancer are more likely to be diagnosed late, which lowers their chance of survival.

"Research shows that women over 70 are less aware of their risk and often delay seeing their doctor when they develop symptoms, particularly non-lump symptoms.”
