Historic Building Could Be Demolished

Friday May 9 2014

The Butchers' Arms The Butchers' Arms

A PUB which has stood for almost two centuries could be demolished to make way for a new development.

The Butchers' Arms on High Street, Monk Bretton, has been derelict for some years after closing as a pub and has been vandalised and set on fire on several occasions.

Now a planning application has been made to Barnsley Council for the building to be demolished.

A doctor's surgery and pharmacy with five flats above could be built on its site.

Those wishing to object to the demolition can write to Barnsley Council.

Did the discos in there for years. Some cracking nights. Blame the greedy pub companies . They won't let a landlord make a living these days

vandals have done exacty what owners wanted, turn it into an eyesore and council will let them do whatever they want. used to be one of best pubs in monk bretton.

When I worked at HPW old miners training opposite Redferns we used to call in butcher every night at 6pm for a few pints in late 80s.

On Friday we finished at 1pm straight to butchers and Landlord shut at 3 but we all stayed till around 5 got taxis into town.

Some of the regulars an draggy lads would pop in between 3 and 5 and we had a good crack.

5pm Landlord go for his tea ready to open at 7 good times
