BARNSLEY Council has approved a price increase for the MiCard discounted travel scheme.

Ruling cabinet members gave the green light to add 10p to its price, with it due to take effect on June 1.

MiCard - which currently allows those up to 18 to travel on buses for 30p - will have its price increased to 40p.

The travel discount applies to all bus journeys in Barnsley, and those between the town and other South Yorkshire districts which start or finish in Barnsley.

At their meeting, cabinet members heard there was a need to revisit the operating costs of MiCard in view of a forecast increase in the operating cost.

The revised scheme is estimated to cost £900,000, saving approximately £400,000.

For children relying on service buses to get to and from school it will work out cheaper for them to buy a weekly stagecoach children's pass for £5

A 33% increase in micard cost I don't understand how a saving of £400,000 can be made it relates to a 44% savings something wrong here. Does anyone on bmbc understand simple arithmetic I suppose not. Wonder what else they get wrong. All of it maybe.

This is a less accurate reporting of something that was in the Chron a couple of weeks ago. A Youth Council member suggested it and asked a few hundred in their peer group if they'd be willing to pay 10p extra to keep the MiCard scheme running - they were willing so it's happened.
I'm proud of the young people of Barnsley have the nous to see long term positives in this.
Once again We Are Barnsley have take all the positive elements out of a story from the Chronicle and posted it on here.

Actually, Murk, we ran that initial Youth Council piece as well. This is merely a follow-up as it's been approved...
