A CARING friend is hoping to raise as much money as possible for her childhood mate whose cancer has returned for a second time.

Debbie Parkes, 36, of Oak Lea Avenue, West Melton, grew up with mum-of-five Andrea Appleby in Bolton-on-Dearne.

Andrea, also 36, was first diagnosed with cervical cancer in September 2011. She had treatment and was given the all clear six months later.

However, just before Christmas 2013 she found out it had returned and she has a tumour attached to her hip bone.

Debbie, who first met Andrea at Heather Garth Primary School, said: "Doctors have been trying to treat the tumour but can't provide the treatment that is needed.

"Her only option is to go private, but this will cost over £75,000. I told her that between everyone we will get there and raise this money, or at the very least help her on the way to the target."

Andrea's family and friends have already been doing various things to raise money such as raffles, sponsored walks and head shaves, but now it is Debbie's turn and she is putting on a day-long event.

A fundraising day on May 17 has been organised, and Debbie hopes a prize-rich raffle will pull in the crowds.

"Two tickets to a Manchester United home game with a pre-match meal and a host of other things have been donated," Debbie added.

"The consultant said the drugs they use will not shrink the tumour, but privately there are more drugs available so I want to give Andrea the treatment she deserves."
