KEY Stage 2 outcomes in Barnsley have risen significantly with the proportion of pupils achieving level 4 or above in English and mathematics increasing by 3.5% from 2010.

The achievement gap in both English and mathematics has narrowed dramatically over the past three years with Barnsley's improvement rate now outperforming nationally in the proportion of pupils achieving Level 4 and above in mathematics.

In English and mathematics combined the gap has reduced from over 4% in 2008 to under 1% in 2011.

Compared to the Yorkshire and Humber region, Barnsley is now outperforming the region in English and mathematics by 1.1% in the subjects combined, by 0.2 % in English and 2.4% in mathematics.

Cabinet Spokesperson Coun Linda Burgess, said: "This is a tribute to the hard work of schools, pupils, the improved leadership and governance arrangements.

"Barnsley is seeing a much faster increase than the national rates of improvement  which is highly encouraging.

"These results mean that our 11 year olds have got a better platform to go on to secondary school."
