Mandela Gardens Targeted In Police Drug Swoop

Wednesday April 16 2014

SIX people were searched for illegal drugs and legal highs when police swooped on Mandela Gardens.

The park, next to the Civic on Hanson Street, has become a top priority for the town centre policing team following reports of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Officers were joined on the operation on April 4 by police dog handler PC Paul Brackpool and his drugs detection dog Duke, who drew attention to five men and a woman gathered at the side of the Civic building.

PC Brackpool said: "There was a strong smell of cannabis on the approach and when the dog went down the line he indicated on them all."

All six were searched and spoken to by officers who seized cannabis and a packet of legal highs from the group.

all of the town centre should be a police priority i cannot walk down racecommon road into town centre at any time in the day without coming across drunk/drugged up people begging for 50p,drinking or doing drugs on the street or shouting abuse at each other/ passers by it's horrible. i like many now avoid barnsley when shopping hence the reason why town business is struggling. end of the day its like dreamland now in town for them. town centre chemists throwing out methadone... why? who lives smack in the middle of town?? also you have the Europe mini mart whatever is it selling cheap super strength beer specifically aimed for the drunks/ druggies that roam drinking all day... also then you have the free needle clinic a short walk away. something needs to be done aabout all of the above to even consider me ever using Barnsley... i am embarrassed by the state of my town i really am

ian whats barnsley going to be like in say 15 to twenty years time scary isnt it.

Maybe instead of targeting kids the police should be targeting the shops that sell these legal highs. Also if they're legal then what right do the police have to confiscate them?

Where do the town centre policing team hang out? I've never seen them but then again I don’t go into town as much as I used to.

We need a higher police presence in the shopping areas of town before people are going to feel confident again. The covert cameras are a good thing but we need to see a real bobby.

I'm in town a couple of times a week and i have never been asked for ten bob or anything by anybody. I think the situation is exaggerated somewhat. Every town and city have these people not just Barnsley.I'm not doubting there are smackheads and alcos being a nuisance, surely the police can implement exclusion zones for these people between cerain hours. They do it with relish for supposed football 'hooligans' why not for the nuisance undesirables? It's the culture of moaners that get on my wick in this town, they're quick to point out the problems and slate the place. But offer nothing in way of solutions.

red i agree alot with what you say ,the drug issue needs money putting into it to reabilitate, give some of these poor sods help rather than the usual crap we throw at them.probably a lot of them have been let down by numerous things ,education ,abused family background, they werent addicted to drugs when they were born society must carry some of the responsibility for what we produce.

omg poor sods, grime of society more like, I wish people would stop blaming their upbringing!! what a cop out. dregs of society that know what the drugs are going to do soon as they try it, if they had learning difficulties then I could understand it... how many of these received an education? probably 99.9%... theres enough info on drugs to have the brain cells to know not to touch it... stop making excuses up for the vermin

I agree with you Red I've never been asked for money and never seen anyone asking for money. Barnsley's no worse than any other Town or City.

Agree with you guy, but some are beyond help or don't want it. At the end of the day it's about personal choice, no ones put a gun against their head and made them fill their veins full of that crap.

Reply Posted by guy fawkes on Wednesday April 16 2014 at 16:19
red the loaded gun of society ensured these people would have no other path to follow but the needle.

Biggest pesterer for "bus fare" is Guthrie from Higham, if I had a tenner for every time he has asked me for "bus fare" whilst I was in town I would be a very wealthy individual.

One day he decided to ask the wrong person for "bus fare" and he (Guthrie) ended up with a black eye...

#karma?

descibing your fellow barnsley inhabitant in the way some of the above have done leaves the circle of drugs unbroken unless we all have a good look maybe even council meetings regaurding funding ect this problem will only fester away ,the police cant cope with it what happens there arrest prision back on the street no job no hope even if youve gotten of the drugs in prision you have a criminal record so no job back to drugs and on it goes .if this issue isnt addressed what is barnsley going to be like in say 10 to 15 years ,people will be forced to turn and look at what we all have allowed to happen.

Guy Fawkes, you speak sense, however you're asking these scared sheep to think 3 dimensionally, outside of the confines of media prescribed opinion. It's clear that most of the people commenting on this thread are incapable of properly qualifying their opinion in a balanced way. As unfortunate as it is, trying to persuade a person who has no understanding of what it is to research their opinion that they are short sighted and their viewpoint inherently flawed, is similar to Stephen hawking trying to have a sentient conversation about physics with a radish. It's guna be pretty one sided, and after a very short time you will realise that it's almost completely pointless lol :)

Agreed Rothschild, the majority who are moaning about the underbelly of society are the ones who in actuality are closest in behavior, spending habits, speech, educational standards and so on.

They do not realise that but maybe they should and maybe they could grow up a bit and educate themselves to the reality of drug addiction, poverty and the associated political issues.

From where I'm stood the pseudo intellectuals are just as scathing and condescending as the other lot, probably more so.
