PROPOSALS to introduce fines of up to £500 to anyone caught abusing the facilities in the square outside Barnsley Town Hall have been approved.

The tough new rules will apply to anyone climbing the sculpture, stunt cycling, skating and putting washing up liquid in the fountains.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman, said many enjoyed using the facilities but there has been instances where the square had been abused.

BMX cyclists and skateboarders have caused damage to stonework, benches and plants since the square was opened last June.

"Byelaws will prohibit this and it is hoped the new skate park at Hoyle Mill will address the issue further," Coun Miller added.

The new byelaws will be enforced by police.

What do you think to this? Is it a good idea? Have your say below.

Not much chance of the police enforcing it as they can't be bothered getting out of their cars

Fancy saying something like putting washing up liquid in the fountain, that's gonna put ideas in people's head and you can guarantee someone will do it!!

I'm pretty sure that playing in the fountains doesn't class as abusing them...unless you widdle in them I suppose.
Don't widdle in them.
From what I've read about this it really is about not doing the things that'll cause damage and mean that time is wasted fixing something that shouldn't have been broken.

The fountains are lovely, there are always odd few people have to spoil things for everyone else though, but don't tar everyone with same brush - ME! Barnsley is full of good decent people. and if u don't like it, why do u live here??
