A BID to the government for £32m of investment to be spent on improving transportation links in South Yorkshire has passed the first stages.

A business case has to be submitted by the end of December to the  Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and a decision on who gets the money will be made next June.

Barnsley Coun May Noble said: “This really is excellent news. A few weeks ago we heard South Yorkshire had been awarded £5m from the LSTF key component bid which, in Barnsley, will fund improvements to walking and cycling routes in the Dearne and underpin the new Jobconector bus service which serves the ASOS warehouse site in the Dearne.

"The Large Projects bid is for £32m. It will allow us to promote sustainable modes of transport on a much wider scale and, for Barnsley, would potentially enable delivery of a number of infrastructure projects, such as our safe walking and cycling routes to the new Advanced Learning Centres and within the town centre.

"The Department for Transport (DfT) has asked us to refine the package of schemes in our expression of interest to improve deliverability and submit our full business case in December.”
