BARNSLEY boss Danny Wilson has insisted his side are going to battle to retain their Championship status after a cruel injury-time goal dented the Reds' survival hopes on Saturday.

The Reds, who remain bottom of the table going into tomorrow night's trip to Reading, are still three points adrift of safety after the 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.

Barnsley started brightly with Chris O'Grady looking lively, his header in the opening minute forcing Bournemouth goalkeeper Lee Camp into early action.

The hosts should have taken the lead after a clear-cut chance fell to Martin Woods, but the midfielder failed to find to find the back of an unguarded goal.

Marcus Pedersen had a host of chances after the break, firstly having his headed effort saved before two shots which failed to hit the target.

The visitors had the momentum in the closing stages with Matt Ritchie hitting the bar from distance, before Steve Cook's 94th-minute goal dealt Barnsley a bitter blow in their quest for survival.

"It's a very cruel game at times," said Barnsley manager Danny Wilson. "When you find yourself in the position that we're in, you just want to have a stroke of luck at times and it went against us.

"We're still in the fight and still in the mix. If we can show this commitment and desire for the rest of the games, we'll have a chance.

"It's tough but it's not something that fazes us. We're going to have a real good go at it."

The club also announced that Chris Hutchings has replaced Micky Mellon as Barnsley's assistant manager.

Hutchings made over 500 professional appearances during his career as a player before moving into coaching, most notably enjoying a double promotion during his time at Bradford City.

Manager Danny Wilson said: "Chris has been a friend for many years and has done very well with the clubs he has worked for."

How do they figure Reds are three points adrift of safety? If they win next game, they will still be in the relegation zone due to a 13 goal difference. Are they assuming Reds will win their next game by 13-0?

They need 20+ points from last 10 games, away record is terrible. Last year they survived with 14 wins in the season, currently they've only won 6 games, which means to match last season finishing 4th from bottom, they need to win 8 out of 10 games. That's not happening, and tomorrow nights game away will just be a nail in the coffin.

It was a mistake to bring Wilson back. He has made very little difference to our performance despite bringing in several players. On Saturday I couldn't fault the effort but they were running round like headless chickens. Why is a player like paddy McCourt sat on the bench he has more skill than the rest of them put together. Okay I know he loaths to chase back but it was crying out for someone like him to unlock the door. What did he do brought waste of space mellis on. Trap door looming I'm afraid and unless they get rid of Wilson it could be division 2,

Why blame wilson ?? The damage was done 2 n half yrs ago when benny hill and fk up an mellon came. The writing was on the wall then. I predicted we would go down. Had it not been for pompey being deducted points season before last, and posh losing last season in the last game ( regardless of the good spell we had ) we would have been down. Lets not forget here here we were 7 goals in deficit after the first two games under fk up flicker. He should have been axed at that point. As for paddy being on the bench, dont you think hes had enough chances to prove his worth. And failed !! We need the intermediate games re introducing. To maintaim match fitness. Sadly it looks like were down.

No I don't think Paddys been given a fair crack at it the last twice he played he was playing behind the front man. Paddys a winger and should be played there. As for Wilson tactically very naive five that played Saturday were his players and they didn't have a clue. Wilson got lucky here first time around cos he didn't do it anywhere else. Sack him cos he's building a team for league 2
