Vandals Ruin Trees In 'Mindless' Attack

Tuesday March 18 2014

A 'DISGRACEFUL' spate of vandalism saw 35 trees damaged so severely that none can be saved.

Vandals struck between Friday night and Saturday morning at Clough Fields Road, Wharncliffe Close and Milton Road, Hoyland, as well as at Elsecar Park.

The trees - aged between six and 30 - were hand-sawn through and felled in several cases.

A Barnsley Council spokesman said: "The youngest tree was about six years old, although planted within the last year and semi-mature trees of 30 years or so were also targeted.

"Many of the trees hadn’t been cut all the way through but had been sawn so deeply as to leave them in an unstable condition.

"Unfortunately, none of the trees could be saved and have had to be removed.

"I can’t believe that an individual or group of people would commit such a mindless act, spoiling areas for many members of the public. It's truly disgraceful."

The police have been informed of the incidents.
