Friends Organise Fundraiser For Teenager Who Died Suddenly

Monday February 20 2012

A CHARITY fund-raiser will be held in Hoyland on Wednesday for a young girl who collapsed and died suddenly last year.

Shannon Deakin was just 16 when she died - she collapsed at her home in Croft Road, Hoyland, and died of a pulmonary embolism, caused by a blood clot moving from her leg up to her chest.

Her friend Luke Greensale has organised the event in her honour, which starts at 7pm at Kirk Balk. It will feature acts like The Urban Jokers which featured on Sky One's Got To Dance and Stew Arnold from Britain's Got Talent. It will also feature an Adele tribute, local girl band Misdemeanor and Harvey Finlay, the 9-year-old Wombwell lad who is awaiting to hear if he's through to this year's Britain's Got Talent.

Luke said: "My family is really close to her family, we live on the same street. She was mad on JLS and music and I wanted to do a remembrance show for her.

"Her parents really wanted to do something to raise money for the paramedics that helped Shannon. They were at her house for two hours trying to save her before they got her in the ambulance and they didn't just drop them at the hospital and go, they stayed with her parents.

"They've kept in contact and her mum keeps taking them flowers and chocolates up but they just want to say thankyou really."

Money will also be spent on a bench in Shannon's honour at Kirk Balk Cemetery and will also be donated to the special care baby unit - as Shannon wanted to be a midwife.

A charity race night was held in January for Shannon which raised £700 and a charity football match in Hoyland raised another £1000.

Tickets to the event cost £3 - call Luke on 07985770099.
