Internet Fraudsters Scam £800,000 From Locals

Friday March 14 2014

SHOCKING research has revealed that Barnsley people have been scammed out of almost £800,000 in online fraud cases in the last year.

The research, done by online cash payment company Ukash, estimates that £790,770 was taken from users in Barnsley by fraudsters duping them into handing over money online.

It is thought they use software known as 'ransomware' - known tactics include encrypting victims' computer files before demanding money to unlock them.

David Cox, head of customer experience at Ukash, said: "We’ve seen a sharp rise in online ransomware scams in the last 12 months, with many internet users feeling powerless to prevent it happening to them.

"The nation being more clued-up to the latest ransomware scams is the only way we will defeat this global problem."

Ukash has now set up avoidonlinescams.net, which offers advice to consumers who have been targeted and scammed over the last 12 months.
