More Council Budget Cuts Announced

Tuesday February 25 2014

CHANGES to Barnsley's music service, resident parking permit schemes and dog warden patrols have all been announced as part of council budget cuts.

Councillors will vote this week on whether the latest round of cuts will be approved.

It inculdes plans to save £175,000 by cutting the numbers of staff Blackberry devices.

Barnsley Music Service will lose £208,000 in financial support and Barnsley Civic Enterprise £20,000.

Residents' parking permits will increase by 50 per cent while burial and crematorium fees will go up by six per cent.

Dog warden cover will no longer be 24 hours, instead ceasing at 9pm, resulting in the kennelling of stray dogs only being available from 9am-9pm.

The latest round of cuts puts a further 27 jobs at risk of redundancy across a number of council departments, bringing the total to date to 162.

Leader of the council Sir Steve Houghton said: "Budget decisions are getting more difficult every time, and there is little flexibility left."

But yet our council tax goes up

That's because most of the money the council spends comes from the government and that is being cut - a lot. Council Tax is only a part of what they have.

Want to make savings ? Do we need three councilers on each ward ?

Why don't they sell Oakwell football ground back to Barnsley FC now their out of receivership and making profits.???

why don't they close the skate park, close the the dumpit sites, close the library, close the civic hall, close the town hall, close the market, close elsecar heritage, close the alambra, close all the pubs and clubs. charge Barnsley fc double rent so they can shut down. then make everyone work a 12hrs 7 day a week shift. so we can pay all double council tax. would that make any more savings 4 ye.

Good point @ ratepayer. Still the multitudes flock in!

As 'Rate payer' has said above. I seriously think we should reduce the number of Councillors we have.

I don't know how we go about this, does anyone on here know how this can be done? The Councillors won't vote their own jobs away, can this be raised?

I do know the Councillors expenses are something we should look at.
The Councillors who are left will have to be more efficient, the trouble is the calibre of our Councillors is quite poor.

A very good point', other councils in the country have thought about reducing the number of councilers per ward. Maybe a search online would produce results?

Quite poor. Don't you mean very poor?

Sorry, they plan to save £175,000 on BlackBerry devices? Which is to say they have been spending substantially more than that to make the saving. Well at least this a cut will be barely noticeable. Unless of course it will be simply respent giving everyone a shiny new iPhone.

Why do council workers need such devices. A BASIC PHONE would suffice for contact. They managed perfectly well without before the mobile how come they need them now. Its the GOVERNMENT not giving councils the money to run efficiently. The councils do not always spend wisely hence the problems. COUNCIL TAX is raised to try to keep some services. What is lost in cuts they try to regain elsewhere. It does not work. Try pushing a football down a plughole.

How is it fair increasing the resident parking permit? We already have to pay a fee and buy tokens for visitors to park outside our own homes just to stop others using it as a car park to avoid paying a parking fee. I accept the fee is not much but to increase when we are already penalised is appalling

21 wards x 3 = 63 councilers x this by a very very conservative cost of say 10,000 each and believe me they cost much much more. Get rid of just one from each ward, this will save 210.000 hey presto u can keep the council tax down or they could keep their blackberry's

The government gives the council less money, so that the council have less to waste. Let us hope that the government gives Barnsley council even less in future.

Houghton earned MORE than the Prime Minister last year, the fat cats at the top couldn't give a **** about normal Barnsley folk so WHY THE HELL DO YOU VOTE THEM IN?

Everyone's best chance is to vote UKIP in May. Barnsley council can do what they like because they think their untouchable. Your right tho look at Royston and Monk Bretton 2 villages with 3 councilors each on 10k plus expenses for doing what? Sitting on other boards lining their pockets with even more money. Time to put the donkeys were they belong back in the field and let someone who cares about this town run it! vote UKIP this May :-)

UKIP?? Those hypocrites that oppose being in Europe yet opt to use a building that received a £3m EU grant?

But then saying that, Labour got us in this mess so UKIP or Lib Dem are better than Labour on all counts!

Richard, there you go again bandying about your ridiculous and sensationalist neo-liberal nonsense.

I have proved to you beyond any reasonable doubt that your idiotic claim of "Labour got us into this mess" is complete and utter codswallop.

I promise I wont mention that the Tory / Lib Dums Coalition have borrowed MORE money in 3 years than Labour did in 13 years, oops!

Back to UKIP, they are indeed a joke but not half as much of a joke than the Lib Dums who are going to get TROUNCED by UKIP in May.

You have proved nothing Steveo old lad. The last Labour government racked up more debt than people can start to imagine. They also stole part of my pension and I suspect part of yours as well.

You obviously didn't read the post I put on a few months ago where I gave Richard detailed statistical analysis that disproved the "myth" that "Labour got us into this mess" Right wing propaganda nonsense.

Stop spending money on that stupid magazine!

Why didn't they sell the land where the library is instead of giving it away ? Any other developer would have had to pay for it and it could have made money for the council
