Warning For Sunbed Shop Owners

Tuesday February 18 2014

SUNBED shop operators across the borough have been warned they have a month to get in line with safety standards - or face legal action.

Barnsley Council's Regulatory Services will be visiting tanning salons across Barnsley over the next few weeks to ensure the beds have a maximum emission of 0.3W/m2 (equivalent to the summer midday sun in the Mediterranean).

Business owners will also be reminded of the Sunbeds (Regulation) Act which bans under-18s from using them.

Penny Greenwood, Barnsley Council's Nurse Consultant in Public Health, said: “The more you use a sunbed, the greater your risk of skin cancer.

"Using a sunbed once a month or more can increase your risk of skin cancer by more than half. So when the tan fades, the damage remains.”

Businesses have until the end of March to make sure their beds comply with UV limits - which could involve replacing tubes with those of a lower wattage.

Is there still enough demand for sunbeds for businesses to have them? I thought the world had woken up to how dangerous they are 10 years ago, especially since spray tan / fake tan give a safe alternative if you don't like the natural look.

Rather go to Mediterranean to get a real sun tan than use sun beds but then again their are a bit expensive so a bottled tan will do me for now anyway

It's about time, I see so many under 16 years of age who have been in sunbed shops, that have gone on over the recommended timings, got too burnt and suffer, it is about time someone did something. Has no one read about skin cancer and it's effects? I always use fake tan, had too many friends that have had skin cancer due to over using sunbeds

Skin cancer will occur in an individual no matter what type of real or artificial sun they have exposure to. If your going to get it you will get it no matter what. So if people are that concerned about skin cancer they should wear UVA and UVB protection 365 days a year. Most people commenting on how bad sunbeds are will probably only wear sun protection for a couple of weeks a year.... Clearly don't do that much reading on the effects of skin cancer!

if sunbeds are such a danger why have they not been banned, or why not tax them like cigs
