Dog Mess Spikes Complaint List

Monday February 10 2014

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A POLL of residents showed dog mess and dog nuisance as one of the top seven complaints affecting locals.

Dog mess and nuisance is the biggest problem in Bolton on Dearne (25.6 per cent) followed by Goldthorpe (21.2 per cent) and Thurnscoe (15.6 per cent) according to those surveyed.

In a report presented to the council, it said: "This is having an effect on where people can take their young children out to play as dogs are left free to roam in the play areas and owners do not pick up after their dogs."

The council's health and wellbeing board agreed plans to create an 'engagement hub' to look at improving facilities in the Dearne following the report.

I am a childminder and walk to school and back again. The number of times one of the older children shouts 'dog poo' to warn others not to stand in it is beyond a joke! People should be ashamed to call themselves dog owners, the problem has got worse over the last year or so. This is Doncaster Road/Stairfoot/Ardsley area x

An " engagement hub?" Really?
Another prime example of BMBC throwing our community tax away. if they hadnt got rid of all the dog wardens, park wardens & keepers these loose dogs would have been taken off the streets & maybe the mess in the parks would be cleaned up regularly. Do they seriously believe Irresponsible owners are going to be convinced to pick up after their dogs or put them on leads by " an Engagement Hub?" It makes me so cross there are too many committees and ridiculous " hubs" stop talking about what needs to happen & just & reinstate the means to do it!!

barber st/greenst hoyland is an absolute disgrace there is at least 100 piles in a 4 minute walk to school and we have complained on no less than a dozen times to council and they said there is nothing they can do unless we see them do it i have told them who it is and where they live as they have 5 dogs and never clean it up and all the council say is we don't have time and they stated they will not clean it up as they don't have the resources DISGRACE !!!

I have to say people love to complain about dog mess & as a dog owner yes I totally agree about it taking 2 mins to bag it & put it in the bin (and I do so) but.........
How about all the litter that people & their children (grrrr) are more than happy to drop on the floor, over a fence, out of their car windows!!!!!
For goodness sakes some trees and fields look like they are growing litter there are so many carrier bags, wrappers etc!!
EVERYONE has a personal responsibility to keep our environment clean

And don't even get me started in fly tipping!!!

Rant over :-)

You idiot above^^^^^ Dog mess is disgraceful and the germs, don,t get ne started rant over.

Reply Posted by sue on Monday February 10 2014 at 14:51
Hey Dixie, I agree with all of that 100%, but dog doo is horrible and stinks like nothing else. Once had some on my shoe unknowingly, and on the drive home, the blow heaters just baked it. Now ordinarily,it wreaks, but you just try the smell when its cooked and in a confined space! Ive never been the same. The old gag reflex is on the edge before I switch the ignition on!! Brrr!

Reply Posted by A Nonnie Mouse on Monday February 10 2014 at 15:01
Sorry June, but there's no need to call anyone an idiot. Dixie is perfectly right about litter being a major, major problem - far worse in fact than the amount of dog mess that is left.
I know that everyone should pick up the dog mess and bag it /take it home and that not everyone does. HOWEVER, the vast majority of dog owners do act responsibly and it is a small number who get dogs a bad name.
You ought to apologise for your outburst or if you can't control your rage, then don't comment.

Ive noticed Mouse that you are forever telling people not to comment for one reason or another. Its not your site bossy boots! Anyone can comment, and as you seem to be often narked at some, then you just stop reading!

Reply Posted by june on Monday February 10 2014 at 19:14
Nonnie mouse - Yes everybody has a right to comment.. FACT is the story is about dog fouling and not litter.

Stick to the topic in question and not about litter etc,

I live in athersley North and the dog mess is all over its awful, everywhere you go, a year or so back the council were doing on the spot fines for people seen to not clear up their dogs mess and for a while it was a lot better round here , but now its back to as it was before , i hate even letting my own dog ( whom i clean up after every time!! ) walk on the grass as she walks through other dogs mess that irresponsible owners have left behind! Its time the council brought back in the on the spot fines , more people would clear up after their dogs if they thought they might get caught and have to pay

Reply Posted by Dixie on Monday February 10 2014 at 12:34
To the person who wrote you idiot above

So people dumping their household rubbish in the countryside etc which often includes dirty nappies etc doesn't spread germs????
And litter, food waste on the streets piled up doesn't encourage vermin???
Never ceases to amaze me how people come on here just to slag everyone else's comments off but have nothing actually worthwhile to say!

Reply Posted by june on Monday February 10 2014 at 12:46
My kids don't play in the countryside..But used to play on the local football pitches and park.. But dirty mindless dog owners feel it is ok for the dogs to mess and not clean up. it is disgraceful when kids cant play because of the crap left behind.. one owner let the dog foul on my driveway without cleaning the mess up. I watched and the owner just walked away. I bagged the mess up and kindly with a note posted through the dog owners letterbox..Funny how the owner now walks his dog somewhere else..

Reply Posted by Colin on Monday February 10 2014 at 14:39
Well done june@ The dirty gits sould clean up after the dogs. Would love to have seen the face of the dog owner when he checked his letterbox. shame on him.

It's getting worse. Sackville St has always been bad for it, especially outside Churchfield vets, where I think they should be taking some course of action, put up notices or something, seeing as a lot of it is obviously coming from their customers!!

Reply Posted by A Nonnie Mouse on Monday February 10 2014 at 15:07
Has anyone thought to contact Churchfield vets and to complain to them about it. They are very approachable and I'm sure that they would put up notices to their customers.
If it is a major problem then speak to the council and get them to have a word about it.

Reply Posted by wendy on Monday February 10 2014 at 16:18
I did contact the council a long time ago regarding this, and it did improve for a while. Didn't think of contacting vets to be honest, as the problem is quite evident enough for them to notice it themselves.

Dear WAB, is it possible for you to let us know what the top 7 complaint area's are?? Dog mess is one of them but what are the biggest complaints and in what order?

Reply Posted by Dixie on Monday February 10 2014 at 15:17
Just to be clear, nothing in my original post said that dog poo being left on the streets, fields or wherever people are leaving is acceptable .......it isn't! I wholeheartedly agree on that one and as a responsible dog owner, I do and have always picked up after my dog
My point was that dog poo whilst being a particularly nasty not being picked up, isn't the only litter, rubbish or anything being thrown, left, dumped problem the area has
I have personally cleaned up large amounts of litter up off the playing field near my house, left by all ages, sex etc daily and particularly after football matches!! Despite there being bins on the edge of the field and outside the changing roomsI often take a carrier with me when walking and pick up as much litter as I can and deposit it in a bin. The Take 5 initiative is a great idea and can be adopted by us all, not just at beaches or coastline
There are bins provided wherever people go with or without dogs USE THEM!

EVERYONE has a responsibility to keep our area clean

Too true you should see the rubbish that we pick up on our walk with the dog there's been allsorts from drug stuff to used condoms ( as bad as dog poo for kids picking them up imho) as well as household rubbish. And that's just within spitting distance of our front door. Those who drop litter won't pick up dog poo regardless of what they are threatened with.

Hemingfield has a problem with dog mess at the minute and it always seems to be 1 particular dog owner that leaves the mess for people to step in. It's absolutely disgusting and foul!!

Oh and a polite note to vehicle drivers, if you continue to park so far onto the path where I cannot pass and have to walk on the road I will start to walk and scratch your cars with my pram. I'm not risking mine and my sons life because of your idiotic parking!

Seen a great idea when I was in Benidorm, all dogs have to be DNA tested free of charge and fitted with a dog collar. Any dog poo found on the street can then be traced to the owner who gets a 300 Euro fine.!! Didn't see any dog **** while I was there.!!!

Reply Posted by mary on Tuesday February 11 2014 at 17:44
On the back wasteland people just bring dogs on or off the lead to poo instead of their own garden. They don't pick it up or the poo on the path. I have seen it myself they have even watched us pick up our dogs poo but they still never bothered. Its the same people one man and his 2 greyhounds, one man with his staffy. A lady with her small dog etc.....they don't care I often think would a mobile pic lead to them being caught but you would probably get bunched if they saw you. Council...........what more is there to say.

My grandson is in a wheelchair and there is always dog mess outside my daughters gate so when my grandson gets wheeled out side he gets dog mess on his wheels so when my grandson touches his wheels then puts his fingers in his mouth you can guess where the dog mess ends up. The annoying thing is there is a sign on the lamppost at the side of my daughters gate that tells about a fine for not cleaning up after your dog

I always pick up both my dogs business and if i see other people not picking up i alway (very loudly) say something. I am also fed up of the amount of horse muck on the paths. if we dog owners have to pick up so should they. the horse muck looks worse and smells. they should be fined too.

Reply Posted by cudether on Wednesday February 12 2014 at 17:11
Cudworth is terrible now, especially outside all the shops and around the schools. I disagree that litter is the same though. Litter is a seperate issue. Litter doesnt tread into your house, get onto your pram wheels and smear everywhere making it stink. Also dog muck that carries parvo leaves traces of the disease on the ground long after its gone, leaving a potentially deadly disease for other dogs laying around which can be transferred home to vulnerable pups etc. Its just disgusting.

Tis true Sid!

Labour are a crafty bunch (but we already know this don't we?) , they sent Councillor Burgess up before to "butter me up" and I told her in no certain terms I would never vote for her (especially) again after her disgusting comments in the Chronicle about a certain workplace in my village that had closed a few years before.
Jarvo got the same too and once he stood in the big pile of what must have been made by an Alsatian or another big dog I shook his hand and said "Welcome to Barnsley, its a shithole! " hahahahahahha

I will never vote for them whilst ever I have a hole in my backside either.

I'm a dog owner and I always pick up there mess and yes in can be a nightmare when I see dog mess all over I've reported it to council as it's getting worse as to so call litter pollution I witness a guy empty ur car ash tray which were about 49 cigs in middle of a roundabout which could have blown into are car window with these strong winds could have caused a accident ...also I think there should me more litter/ dog mess bins available as when ur carrying rubbish and dog bags for ages people will throw I always wrapped two dog bags and put in a carrier till I find a bin but then again people will damage and set fire to bins so it's all needs to be looked at and more on the spot fines with both dog mess and litter pollution it's simple xx

I also live on athersley north and the walk up to my sons school is lyk an obstical course due to the dog mess. Forever telling my 2 n 6 year old boys to watch out for it. Its all over the paths and all over the grass. Something has to be done. And also I know someone who's two little dogs that were just short of having there 1st lot of injection have just died from parvo. These 2 dogs had never been out so the parvo must have been transfered into the house on the shoes of visitors. Come on bmbc pull your finger out!!!!!!

Reply Posted by Kfc on Sunday February 16 2014 at 12:43

Reply Posted by emma on Sunday February 16 2014 at 12:53
If bmbc were more active of handing out the fines for people that don't pick it up then they would think twice about leaving the dog shit on the paths.

90% staffy doings - the choice of the chav in any council estate on any day of the week you are guaranteed to see at least one wandering around. Nay mind blaming council, people should be responsible for their own actions, bring back dog licenses I say, too many bloody people who can't even look after themselves owning dogs. All part of 21st century scum Britain.

I walk my two dogs in royston down common lane to fields and have to step over large piles of dog poo, its a disgrace, i have poo bags in every coat pocket. As for spreading deceases both my dogs are full vacinated, but if people can't be bothered to pick up after their dog maybe they can't be bothered to have them vacinated either?, i've seen people while i've been out just keep walking while their dogs are actually doing it as if they haven't seen 'em ! Should be ashamed, but i fear people who leave there dog poo on the street dont care anyway so it will never change.

It's disgraceful on Doncaster Rd in Barnsley. I see a women every day letting her two huge grey hound dogs crap in the park where my children have to play. She never picks it up even though there are 2 dog waste bins in the park. I'm not sure who to report her to, or even if anything can be done. I know she works for the council herself. Dirty cow.

Please I have been on a mission for weeks to try and catch the dirty dog owner in Ardsley (he or she knows who they are) they walk their dog daily up the main road usually on the opposite side to the school and sometimes through the park or chaple street we have followed the trail up the ramp over the bridge as far as McDonalds there is a fresh pile everyday, we know it's the same dog as the colour gives it away, there are lots of Mums and residents on the lookout so beware you WILL be caught and fined or worse

Reply Posted by g on Tuesday March 11 2014 at 14:36

It's the whole of Barnsley That's got dog mess covering almost every street.
Role on when the DNA system comes and fines, bet they clean it up then.
It is disgraceful. I clean up after my dogs in the backs and when I am out, I then come home to clean everyone else dogs mess off my front lawn, and off my kids shoes after the school run.
I think the council should spend money on paying more I forcemeat and the money they get back in fines will pay for their wages twice over!

Reply Posted by Rubydoo on Tuesday March 11 2014 at 18:24
There are some dirty selfish dog owners about. It makes me sick how they just leave their dogs mess on the pavements for everyone to tread in or on playing fields for children to get covered in. They are totally ignorant morons. I would gladly agree to the council employing people to catch these morons and fine them. Money recouped in fines would easily pay their wages.
Another annoying thing is dog owners who let their dogs yap yap yap in the back garden. We've recently moved house and there is a dog yapping in a garden at the back of me................even as I type! I've seen the owner she's a right slack alice, after half an hour she comes out and tells it to shut up, it doesn't take a blind bit of notice of her! This is a private residential area, how can people be so ignorant and stupid!

Sympathy with this one Collet, we also have a cat fouling our lawn, or did have fingers crossed we haven't seen any for a few days. I bought some cat/dog repellent from the pound shop and some cheap coffee, cleaned up the mess first then sprinkled the repellent and coffee there. Also sprinkled some round border of lawn in the hope that the cat won't cross it.
I found this tip on google. Have also been advised to try planting lavender. Sprinkling orange or lemon peel also supposed to help.
Good Luck!
