Businesses Moves After Burglary Spate

Wednesday February 12 2014

A GOLDTHORPE business has announced that it is moving premises after a spate of burglaries.

GM Asquith Fabrications, which has been on Beever Street for 13 years, will move to an industrial estate in the Dearne Valley after being broken into four times in four years.

Spokesman Dawn Asquith said: "We were broken into before Christmas and that made it four times in four years.

"The time before last we were wiped out. We had no equipment and it was difficult to keep staff on. The break-ins have stunted the business but we have plenty of options going forward now."

The company makes bespoke gates, railings and other made-to-measure light steel fabrications.

Plans were submitted to Barnsley Council for 16 homes on its site and if successful the firm will sell on the land to a developer.

problem with that area is it was a mining community and we are still feeling the effect of Thatchers selfish actions to this day, if pitts stayed opened longer and was still open that would mean jobs for local peolple which would automatically bring crime down!

Good grief! are people still trying to blame Thatcher for all the ills of South Yorkshire. The strikes ended almost 30 years ago and we are still wallowing in self pity. This was not the effect of Thatchers selfish actions, this is the effect of the selfish actions of criminals that blight our area. You will be blaming it on poverty and lack of jobs next! Well, I do not have a job (not through choice) I exist on a very small pension. I choose not to go out and steal from those who are trying to earn an honest living, or to attack and rob pensioners as someone did in Spring Street, Barnsley last week.

its time to stop harping on about pit closures, there are plenty of work opportunities in the goldthorpe area. the simple fact is certain parts of society have no morals and some people live their lives by stealing and generally living off ill gotten gains.

I believe glen martin has a point, to a point. There was a lost generation, left jobless, now their kids have been brought up with unemployment and see it as the norm. It is time to move on,but the agency's and zero hour contract are working against workers, not with them. Its all gone belly up. Zero hours contract need outlawing and then decent employment can be given.

We only have zero hours contracts because the last Labour government introduced a whole raft of changes to employment law which made it really difficult for employers. Everything under Labour was in favour of the employee and nothing to help the employer. Zero hours contracts were simply introduced to even things up a little.

Alan B, Im not really bothered about who introduced it,but I do think its wrong. This has set my coggs whirring though. Histoically education differed in different parts of the country, the northern schools concentrating on manual skills, woodwork etc, while the southern schools were taught more academic subjects. Reports are showing poor educational standards here in the north now days. Are our children being educated poorly so that they will fit in just nicely within the warehouse jobs? Is the north south divide going to get even wider? Its just a thought and I hope my imagination has got the better of me.

Without doubt the North/South divide will become wider for a whole variety of reasons. Educational standards and employment opportunities being just two of them.

Typical ex pit village refusing to move with the times. Sid you are right that many young miners never worked after the pits shut and this has had a knock on effect on the later generations. I have worked in these areas and been in the houses of the long term unemployed. Most have no intention of working and others have will never work as they have no skills or qualifications. Should we blame the pit closures for the lack of effort at school and in exams?

Your right about education blue egg. With the latest reports that Sth.Yorks schools with Barnsley at the helm are failing miserably its time everyone moved on. The world has changed and education is the answer to a lot of problems regarding employment. If our schools are not brought up to a better standard then our workforce will be fit for only the warehouse based jobs. If I were young,I would look at those jobs as a stop gap whilst getting educated along the way. Hope things do start getting better in our schools,it seems to go downhill at the primary schools. I'm worrying about my grandkids already at 2 and 8. They are both shining, especially the eldest,it would be a waste if he gets lost in a failing education system. Hope it changes for the better in time for him.

Talking of Goldthorpe - the worst school in Barnsley is the Dearne Academy. Only 30% of kids there getting the needed exam results.

So you have a poor area with high unemployment, poor investment and then it has the worst school. No wonder Goldthorpe has high crime. What a waste of a lot of kids futures.

Now the worst dog fouling is in the Dearne too! What next?

Investment and education seriously needed for this area methinks.

Blue egg, Ive had no dealings with the Academys yet,but the posts on this site, makes bad reading. You're right ,and as I posted further up the thread, I'm suspicious that our part of the country is purposely being held back.

And they wonder why no one wants to bring investment in to Goldthorpe, here is your answer.

The terrible scenes of yobs celebrating Thatchers death, tortured dogs and so on and now this. The place is a lost cause.

Goldthoroes a small village, i lived there for 12 month and got to know who was stealing this or dealing that. People are well aware who's responsible for most of the crime but choose to say nothing for fear of reprisals, if they want to spend their days being ruled by the scum of society ive no pity !

How can people blame pit closures for criminal behaviour? The scenes on the news were terrible following Thatcher's death. So embarassing to be from Barnsley on that day. I was working in the Head Office of a large company in London on the day she died. People were actually saddened by her death.

Get over the pits. It was a long time ago.

Here we go again, the top end has always been rough ive been up here 20 years and there are bad people and good people. I didnt agree with the Thatcher carry on it was mainly people who were sat outside the pub who have never had a job in their lives, very few were miners. As far as the school goes i have always said i will never send my kids there but I am very glad I did. I removed them from a so called good school in barnsley where bullying is rife and the teachers dont give a monkeys to a school that is working its way up thanks to a very good headmistress. What people have to think about is there are many people who are moving into the area that have bring fresh thinking and yes jobs!! there are plenty of jobs in goldthorpe and surrounding areas take aldi in highgate/bolton 200+ jobs, most wont go to locals because of the reputation and it isnt fair.I just wish people who put everyone from up here in the same boat would stop most of the village is good but same as Tony says it wont ever get sorted until people grow a pair and get rid of the bad.
