FINES of up to £500 could be issued to anyone caught abusing the facilities in the new square outside Barnsley Town Hall.

The tough new rules will apply to anyone climbing the sculpture, stunt cycling, skating and putting washing up liquid in the fountains.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman, said many enjoyed using the facilities but a few had started to misuse them.

"BMX cyclists and skateboarders have caused damage to stonework, benches and plants," he added.

"Byelaws would prohibit this and it's hoped the new skate park at Hoyle Mill will address the issue further."

The new byelaws will be enforced by police.

A quick buck..bloody shameful -- well my friend, after the paving was laid and then the skateboards and cycles moved in and damaged the Yorkstone kerbs and the benches..............it cost £20k to repair...................you work the maths out!!! that's £20k that could've been spent elsewhere...

It would be a terrible shame if it was spoiled. It is a lovely area.

Good! This will stop all the scruffs going for a shower under the fountains.

This should be rolled out across the borough, skate boarders creating their own tracks by damaging footpaths and grassed area's.

20k in the lazy, money grabbing councilors hands. Barnsley council should have weighed it all up BEFORE they decided to go ahead with it.....I have an average IQ and even I could see what was going to happen. Just another get rich scheme thought out by baffoons!

The Police aren't really bothered about smack rats, burglary and mugging, do you really think they are going to give a toss about washing up liquid in the fountains?

Wonder who pays for that lovely water bill they will be putting a fence round it next and charging people to go sit and look at it .. good old washing up liquid trick bring your pots n pans :')

The water gets recycled, it isn't a constant supply (like having a fish pond in your garden with a fountain) - hence why they don't want washing up liquid in there as it will just go round and round as it is recycled.

If you ask me they have taken away a perfectly good car park. The allyway near my house in low vally is constantly covered in dog shite that need cleaning on a daily basis but no. The council waste more money on crap that we dont need or want :0/

bye-laws mean **** all -- we have bye-laws on the estate that we live on that says NO BALL GAMES
When I had my window put through by a football the police said they couldn't do anything - when I said there was a bye-laws that prevented ball games on the estate they told me to contact a solicitor as they couldn't do anything.
