Communities Asked To Step Up Amid Budget Cuts

Tuesday February 7 2012

THE next round of council budget cuts are to be debated at a meeting tomorrow amid news that people will be asked to step in and help maintain their own communities.

Cuts to front-line council services are being considered as part of the next round of budget cuts from Barnsley Council after it was told it has to cut £24m from its budget over the next three years.

A list of suggested changes has been made that include the Mi Card travel pass (which costs £2 million-a-year) and reductions in front line services like grass cutting, dog wardens and litter collections.

The report suggests cutting the dog wardens to just one post to deal with the 1,100 customer requests received each year and reducing the Trading Standards team in terms of consumer advice – which could impact on rogue traders and things like under age sales of alcohol, tobacco and fireworks.

It also suggests cutting back the number of staff who maintain and inspect headstones in cemeteries to make sure they are safe; reduce grass cutting schedules and reduce the frequency for collecting litter and cleaning streets.

But the report also says Barnsley people will have to take more responsibility for their communities and take on some roles that had previously been offered by the council.

The report said: “Last year the council spent £1.5 million clearing up other people’s litter. At a time of severe service cuts it’s worth thinking how that money could have been better spent.

“Local communities could also organise local “clear up” campaigns of community land and again organise or join local Friends Groups.”

The meeting will be held tomorrow.

1 Cut of executive pay and pensions, so that the raises are inline with frontline staff and not doubled as they have in the last 10 years.
2. Reduce the amount of councillors
3. Reduce councillor expenditures.
4. Reduce the social budget for councillors and execs, less of the free dinner brigade.

Did the Council ever claw back any of the £17,000 it allegedly contributed to Alan Schofield's fencing, double glazing, decorative double gates, railings, lockable letter box, security bolts and CCTV?.

the community of barnsley that i experience is mainly dispondant and morale is very low in our town...people dont trust authority much anymore...certain council employees hold grudges and are predjudice, our council and our courts collude to deprive you of your justice, the police make false statements, social workers are hunting for the blood of people, school subscriptions officers and management teams are not impartial when making decisions so they can send kids to failing schools so they get funding....and these are just some of the personal experiences my friends and myself have experienced....god only knows what else goes on.....and when you try getting in touch with ombusmen the council treat them with contempt....these are all allegations i can prove but have been denied that chance through the misadministration of a so called solicitor who "forgot to send my application form in for legal aid" and "went on holiday" ruining my chances of getting any justice.....this is just a whinge about the services people get from public departments in our town and im sure other people have comments which they "would rather keep to themselves and not attract negative attention"...but unfortunately this dispondancyis a part of the reason why it is like it is in our town......people need to stand up and be counted...yes, i agree.  but not with a broom and a shovel to pick up rubbish on our town streets but to sweep the dirge from public office by challenging this mafia before our town and our childrens futures is depicted by these charlatans.
p.s. - i thought barnsley had a high crime rate so why cant the council consider employing community service workers to be imobilised to administer the issues they concern themselves with and give people hands on experience in street cleaning and dog foul administration...who knows it may lead to a career ....your thoughts are welcome.
