Nine-Man Reds Denied Derby Day Point After Late Goal

Monday February 3 2014

Sent off: Frimpong Sent off: Frimpong

TWO sending offs and a 97th-minute goal condemned the Reds to defeat in a ferocious South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Just 24 hours after joining from Arsenal, Emmanuel Frimpong was shown a yellow card twice in five first-half minutes.

Wednesday substitute Jermaine Johnson followed him on 80 minutes while Barnsley midfielder Jacob Mellis later on.

The dismissals proved costly for Barnsley as Maguire drilled home from 20 yards - seven minutes into injury time.

Despite the hosts' strong start, the first chance of note fell to Barnsley striker Nick Proschwitz who was twice denied from a corner, first seeing his 12-yard volley blocked on the line by Liam Palmer, before Chris Kirkland saved the rebound.

On 23 minutes - after being warned by referee Andre Marriner for persistent fouls - debutant Frimpong was finally booked.

It didn't take long for him to pick up a second yellow when, five minutes later, he brought down Maguire with a clumsy challenge from behind.

The home side grew agitated, culminating in a straight red for Jermaine Johnson after a two-footed challenge on Brek Shea.

Looking destined for a goalless draw, another twist happened soon after when Mellis recklessly jumped in on Wednesday winger Jacques Maghoma and was sent off.

And it was Barnsley who were made to pay when substitute Jim O'Brien miscued a clearance in the 97th minute straight to Jose Semedo.

He fed Maguire, who provided the day's one moment of real quality to settle an ill-tempered South Yorkshire derby.

Boss Danny Wilson said: "I feel for the team as a whole because we were brilliant when we had 10 men.

"Jacob's red card was just stupidity but I think it was frustration from the stonewall penalty being turned down. We could have won the game but instead we've lost it."

Next up for the Reds is a home game against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

I've supported barnsley ever since they got promoted to the premier league - before that I supported Man U .. We deserved everything we got on Saturday .. Danny should never have waved to the Wednesday fans as this galvanised the Wednesday players .. At the end of the day we just arn't good enough

Hold on a minute, we had ten men for the majority of the game, then nine men and lost with the last kick of the game. Good effort from the lads, I'm glad wendys enjoyed their cup final.

I also started supporting TARN when they got promoted to the premier league - I thought when we appointed Danny again he could get us back there this season .. However his negative tactics and waving to the Wednesday fans upset me - I now realise that we are heading in one direction and that's darn ! He got it all Erin on Saturday - his tactics were wrong and too negative - we should have attacked - their goal was inevitable ... Grim future for you reds am afraid .... Al still support em mind ... Yooooooooooou redssssssss

Well said tactician ... At least it wasn't me that was thinking/seeing what you have put ! The club have taken a backward step appointing Wilson .. We are currently in free fall and going down quicker than Jordan !!

@ the ones knocking Wilson, really?
He inherited a poor team with sub-standard players. Straight away he recognised this and got rid of the deadwood replacing them with better quality. This doesn't happen overnight, maybe you should watch netball or something because you know nothing about football.

Reply Posted by hilary on Monday February 3 2014 at 12:10
it would be better than watching dire bfcrap.

Reply Posted by Red Optimist on Monday February 3 2014 at 17:43
Replacing them with better players? I'm not sure about that. Most of them are unfit cripples and have not played football for several years. I saw the team arrive at Hillsborough on Saturday and most of the players limped in or were using walking sticks or crutches.

Reply Posted by Pit street pony on Monday February 3 2014 at 18:33
One thing Wilson must do is get rid of that plant pot Jim O'brien - waste of space - cant even kick a ball straight - useless .... Plus Luke Steele is crap .. We've gone down hill since that stoke keeper went back ...come on Danny get somebody signed up quick ..! Yooooooooooooou reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeds

We all need to get in the real world here ... The first half we competed for 30 minutes .. Then that fool got sent off and forced Danny hand regards tactics ... Wednesday then controlled the game .. The rest of the season is gonna be a real struggle - just like the last 3 seasons.

Did anyone off here actually go to the match I though we (Barnsley) absolutely battered Wednesday. The fact they had 70% possession doesn't reflect how good the reds were. Lots of positives to take from the match (like our support which was brilliant)
